Job overview

Comprehensive corporate healthcare. Relocation package available.

West Lakes Academy is a thriving, ambitious and forward thinking 11-18 Academy (NOR 1100) in Egremont, West Cumbria. The school is situated on the edge of the beautiful Lake District and is in a brand new, £27m building with outstanding facilities incorporating cutting edge technology which provides a bright and motivational learning environment.

Over the last 5 years the Academy has enjoyed a period of sustained improvement that has seen results improve year on year and an Ofsted judgement of ‘Good’ in 2013. With the retirement of the current Principal the Academy is now seeking to appoint a new Principal who will build on this success and bring fresh challenge and ideas that will further raise standards, working towards the goal of being recognised as ‘Outstanding’.

The Academy’s sponsors - Sellafield Limited, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and the University of Central Lancashire – have each played an important role in its success and are committed to its continued improvement. Beyond that they are passionate about the local area and improving life chances for people who live there. They are ambitious and motivated to work with the new Principal to develop opportunities for the Academy to play a key role in the transformation and regeneration of the local area by developing closer working relationships with other schools to support their improvement.

At the heart of the school’s success has been a commitment to providing an experience which develops the whole child, preparing them for a successful life beyond school. This has been achieved through a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum delivered by a committed and talented staff who genuinely care about the success and well-being of the young people. Governors are committed to maintaining this culture and recognise it must be delivered in a way that ensures every pupil makes the very best progress at all times.

This is an exciting time for West Lakes Academy and the Governors are seeking a Principal who shares that excitement. The Academy’s commitment to high quality learning applies equally to all of its staff and, if you have the necessary ambition and drive, this role will provide you with outstanding opportunities to develop professionally.

If you are an experienced senior leader in a secondary setting, with a successful track record of sustained improvement and a determination to maximise the opportunities available then this role offers an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself in a new environment. Highly motivated and driven, applicants must be committed to high quality teaching and learning and should have the creativity and vision to inspire and lead change but also the focus to ensure successful outcomes are reached. You will need a ‘can-do’ attitude that can inspire and engage students, staff and the local community.

You must display compassion and be familiar with holding staff accountable whilst being accountable yourself. You will have an excellent understanding of the qualities required for effective school leadership. You must be confident and positive and have the skills to build relationships with a wide variety of external partners. Above all, you will share our passion and belief that children, their learning and developing their potential is at the heart of all decisions.

West Lakes Academy in Egremont, Cumbria, provides education to children from 11 to 18 years old. We opened in September 2008 and moved into our brand new building in March 2012. As an academy, we are independently governed but state funded and free to all children. Like other schools, we are subject to normal OFSTED inspections and work with the Local Education Authority in relation to issues such as admissions.

Our vision is to succeed in ‘Changing Lives through Learning’ by providing the very best possible educational opportunities for young people in West Cumbria. We have extremely high hopes for all of our students and our highly skilled and enthusiastic members of staff encourage children to have high ambitions and to work hard to achieve these.

Students and staff benefit from fantastic facilities, outstanding IT resources, a £300k engineering facility, performing and expressive arts suite and a brand new eco science lab in our brilliant £26m building. All this makes West Lakes Academy one of the best possible places in which to study. Our excellent environment helps keep motivation and morale high and allows us to deliver modern approaches to learning using the latest technologies.

We are sponsored by two of the most important energy organisations in the UK and two of Cumbria’s largest employers; The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Ltd. They provide invaluable resources and industry support to our specialism in Science. We also receive excellent higher education expertise from our education partner, the University of Central Lancashire.

The academy was last inspected by Ofsted in March 2017 and was judged ‘Outstanding’ in all areas of the inspection. We have a strong record of academic excellence and our standards are high; our GCSE results are in the top 20% nationally, whilst our A Levels are in the top 10%. We are never satisfied however and are always looking for improvements and evidence-based best practise to build on these outstanding results. We have an ambitious and inspiring curriculum, delivered by subject experts in the classroom and enhanced by a strong tradition of extra-curricular activities. We frequently  achieve county and national success in many areas such as performing arts and a variety of sports. All students at West Lakes Academy access a broad and balanced curriculum, learning knowledge that empowers them to take their place in society once they leave us.

The hard work of our pupils and the dedication of our skilled members of staff enable us to provide students with the education they need for a successful and happy future.
