Job overview

Full time, TEMPORARY, Private Tutor, Paris (and maybe Lisbon).

Students: A boy, 14, and a girl, 13.

Overview

An energetic, youthful, erudite, professionally qualified teacher with at least 3 years classroom experience is required to fill a full time tutoring role starting in September 2015. The position is with two lovely children who split their time mainly between Paris and Lisbon. The role will involve frequent travel between the two, and encompasses taking the children to school and collecting them, as well as supervision. The students are a 14 year old boy and a 13 year old girl.

Students

The boy is a quiet young man with an appetite for adventure sports such as body-boarding, and rock climbing. Academically, his interests lie in literature, film, and writing short sorties and novels. For him, teachers should earn respect through having passion for their subject and the ability to in-spire students. His favourite teacher introduced him to Austrian literature, encouraging debate and intelligent questioning. He thrived in the environment enabling freedom of expression without judgement.

The girl makes her own jewellery and is a keen equestrian. More efficient management of schooling and homework would allow her more time at the stables, which she would enjoy. Her current hobbies should be encouraged, but she should also be exposed to more activities to help her expand her interests. She favours teachers who are warm, caring and considerate. She is happy to learn, but currently lacks the self-discipline for independent study and homework.

The two children get on very well with each other and are close. They are a little isolated socially and the Tutor must be aware of this, making sure that their social skills are nurtured as much as their academic skills. Suitable social opportunities should be sought out, and extra curricular activities that involve other children should be embraced. An element of community service would help them expand their social networks and develop confidence in their social skills.

Role of the Tutor

The children’s parents have recently separated, and the children now spend half of each year with each of their parents. The children themselves are coping well with their circumstances. They are tri-lingual (French, German and English) and currently attend a bilingual school in Paris. The Tutor’s role is partly to create some consistency of educational support with all the geographical movement, partly to help with the logistics, and partly to broaden the children’s educational context. While the children attend school in Paris, the tutoring plan would be an after-school supporting role. Both children have complained about school teachers who have left a bad impression, and the Tutor must work to redress this.

Another plan being considered is that the children relocate to Lisbon with their mother and attend an IB school, with vacations and some of the term time spent with their father. In this case, the Tutor will be on hand in the afternoons to assist with homework, and to give them a good foundation for the next days’ learning. Some bridging work may also be required. The Tutor will need to build a good working relationship with the school and teachers to ensure the children are coping well with lessons, and to make sure that they have accurate plans for up-coming material so that adequate preparation can be done to ensure success in the classroom.

In both cases, the Tutor will need to differentiate their teaching to ensure both students are being challenged. They must be able to provide the full range of subjects, paying particular attention to the sciences and the arts. It would be advantageous if the Tutor shared one or more of both children’s interests.

The Tutor should be an exceptional educator in a role that will require them to be all things to all people. They should be diplomatic, polite and friendly at all times, prepared to work closely with other educators, and be very organised in their own work. The Tutor should have a wide knowledge base and a range of interests. The Tutor should be a natural communicator with a kind and caring disposition, and a firm-but-fair approach to their work. He or she should be eloquent, able to explain concepts simply and able to inspire the children with his or her enthusiasm. The ideal Tutor will be bilingual French-English and should be prepared for significant amounts of travel.

Hours Holidays and Accommodation

This is a full time position and, where possible, learning should follow a carefully planned timetable. The Tutor should expect to work around thirty-five hours per week with preparation in addition. The Tutor is entitled to 45 working days holiday per annum at times agreed with the Client, with two consecutive days off per week on average, usually at the weekends. Furnished accommodation will be provided in all locations.

Travel and Miscellaneous

The Client will be responsible for all the Tutor’s travel expenses and accommodation arrangements, but not their food or personal telephone usage. The Tutor is welcome to bring their car to Paris.

This role is based in Europe, so any candidates for the position must have full rights to employment and residency in a European country.
