Job overview

Private Tutor, Travelling
To start: September 2015, for 6 months
Students: Two boys, 13 and 11, and one girl, 8

Overview
A dynamic, broadly capable educator is required to work with three children ranging in age from 7-13 years old for 6 months from September 2015. The position will likely be based in South-East Asia, and will involve some travel. The children are following the British private school curricula and will need to reintegrate on their return from their travels. This period away from London is designed to give the children a chance to experience a different way of learning as their eldest transition from primary to secondary education.

Student(s)
By September 2015, the oldest boy will be 13, and entering year 8. His brother will be 11 and entering year 7, and their sister will be 8, and entering year 4. They currently attend excellent private schools in London, following the British education system. A break at this stage to allow the children to experience a different educational setting is one of the main goals of this assignment.

The children are energetic, inquisitive and hardworking. They are interested in animals, knowledgeable about the world, and are well travelled. All three children enjoy sports. The girl rides horses, loves street dance and plays piano. The boys are both tech savvy and aware of developments in the industry – it will be important for the Tutor to be ‘with-it’ in this regard. The oldest boy likes gadgets, writes rap, poetry and sings, while the younger boy plays the drums. The children are polite, gregarious, considerate and thoughtful and will be a pleasure to teach.

The Tutor must be able to think ‘outside the box’ and vary their teaching methods to keep lessons interesting while at the same time constantly adapting their teaching style to find what works best with each of the children. Part of their time away will be dedicated to a socially responsible, community-based project. The Tutor should be sympathetic to these principles and ideals and incorporate these values into their lessons.

Role of the Tutor(s)
The family plans to take their children out of school for a six-month period to expose the children to other ways of life. They plan to travel in South-East Asia, though their itinerary has yet to be confirmed. Possible locations include Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Sri Lanka and/or Costa Rica. The Tutor is expected to travel with the family on at least some of their excursions, providing a learning environment that is free-thinking, inspirational and enjoyable, but also structured enough to ensure the children keep in line with their peers back in London.

The role requires a superb educator, who has the ability to use their environment to make their lessons come alive, and who has the experience of teaching across the age range involved in this contract. They should have excellent subject knowledge, and infectious enthusiasm for every subject they cover. The Tutor must recognise that their students need to be well versed in the appropriate levels of the core subjects on their return to mainstream school. Maths and Science and English are especially important, so it is essential that the Tutor is a specialists in these subjects.

The inspirational environment of the South-East Asia or along the largely undeveloped Pacific coast offers unparalleled opportunities to illuminate the curriculum and enhance the learning experience in ways that should make this experience something special. The Tutor should use the local environment as a resource wherever possible. The Tutor must be organised, flexible and adaptable. The role is likely to be based in remote locations that can make technology unreliable. The Tutor must make allowance for these events rather than getting frustrated.

The family is looking into the possibility of enrolling their children into local schools on a short-term basis. If this is the case, the Tutor will be required to work closely with the school, possibly even assisting the main teacher in the classroom or helping in some other way with the school. The Tutors will have to be good at building relationships with the school staff to ensure that the children get the very best out of this arrangement.

This role requires resourceful, intelligent and knowledgeable educator who is sensitive to the unusual circumstances of the position, relaxed and easy-going with a sunny disposition on the one hand while firm, encouraging and directed on the other. It is also important that the Tutor remembers that although the working environment is relaxed compared to formal schooling in England it is essential they remain professional at all times, respectful of the family’s privacy, and aware of the confidential nature of the assignment.

Hours and Holidays
The Tutor should expect to work an average of 40 hours per week with preparation time in addition. They will be entitled to two consecutive days off each week. The Tutor will not be entitled to local public holidays. Any untaken holiday entitlement that has accrued will be compensated for at the end of the contract. The Tutor must arrange and finance their own health, possessions, and travel insurance.

Accommodation and Travel
The Client will provide separate, furnished accommodation with Internet for the Tutor, which will likely also act as the children’s schoolroom. This accommodation will be clean, safe and secure, but given the style of travelling the family wants to undertake, it may be comparatively basic.

The Client will be responsible only for the first outward and final return journey (or equivalent cost) from London for each assignment, and for any travel during the contract that the Tutor is asked to undertake. If a tutoring couple is assigned this role, the Client may opt to only take one of the Tutors with the family when they are travelling.
