ABOUT US

Silkstone Primary School is a very popular, warm and welcoming one-form entry local authority community primary school with a pupil role of 210 (current numbers: 214) across 7 classes (Reception and Years 1 to 6). We are in the lovely rural village of Silkstone to the west of Barnsley in the heart of beautiful greenbelt and rolling countryside and just a short distance from the Peak District National Park. Situated just 5 minutes from Junction 37 of the M1, we are very easily accessible from major cities in South and West Yorkshire and excellent rail links to mainline stations are available locally.

Ours is a school community where everyone is valued and supported, where all work hard to be the best we can be, both as learners and as responsible citizens and members of society. We are proud of our inclusive approach which we believe brings a greater richness to all our children’s lives as they learn to recognise, understand and appreciate differences.

We have a hard-working, committed, collaborative and experienced staff group, who deliver excellent outcomes for our children through teaching which is consistently always at least good or better. We have supportive and engaged parents and carers who have high expectations of their children and our school, and who are actively involved in school life. Most of all, we have wonderful children who are a joy to work with, love learning, and who live and breathe our school values. They are excellently behaved, engaged learners and achieve very good outcomes. Taken together, these attributes combine to create a school of which we are proud.

We are an outward-facing school that is engaged with the very supportive local pyramid of ten primary schools in surrounding villages.  Like children at those local primaries, most of our pupils go on to attend the good local secondary school, Penistone Grammar School ALC, whose pupils achieve good outcomes and with whom we have  strong links.

Our governing body is highly effective, extremely supportive, outward looking, strategic and fully understands its role and responsibilities. It is actively engaged with school life, and also with other local governing bodies. Indeed we initiated the formation and leadership of a local pyramid governance development group which has had an important role over the last 3 years in strengthening governance in our local pyramid schools, and also in strengthening relationships and collaboration between school leaders, building on the existing effective and supportive pyramid headteachers’ group.
