Job overview

St Paul’s Girls’ School is looking to appoint an experienced Rowing Coach to support its vibrant and growing rowing programme. The roleholder will coach and teach rowing to girls of varying ability, and provide strength and conditioning and weights training to both rowers and other students. There may also be scope for involvement in PE teaching in other sports. The coach will have responsibility for managing specific year groups or boats into major competitions, undertaking the day to day administration of crew lines ups and the organisation surrounding events and trips.

There are significant before school, evening and weekend requirements for this role and these are reflected in the overall timetable. Rowing coaches assist with boating and the putting away of boats, rigging, trailer loading and unloading and the maintenance of the fleet. The successful candidate may be required to manage a group of GB candidates and oversee the trials process in Boston and Nottingham in addition to attending training camps and some other residential events (eg a residential camp at Easter and the National Schools Regatta in June).

Candidates should have a sound technical knowledge of the rowing stroke and experience in coaching/teaching across all levels. They must be able to drive a launch confidently and have a good understanding of the navigational rules of the river. A power boat 2 licence and previous knowledge of the Tideway would be an advantage. Experience of rowing or coaching at medal winning standard would be desirable.

The successful candidate will be joining a hard-working and thriving department and must be able to contribute to the overall development of PE and contribute ideas and experience to the rowing programme. Most of the full-time teaching and coaching staff at the school are pastoral tutors or assistant pastoral tutors. Tutors meet daily with their tutees and keep an interested, but unobtrusive, eye on their progress and wellbeing to create a supportive and encouraging environment in which the girls are able to flourish.

Terms and conditions of the post
Salary is according to qualifications and relevant experience on the first five points of the St Paul’s Girls’ School salary scale for teachers (current year’s attached). Successful candidates for posts here are required to complete a medical declaration and undergo the normal DBS checks.
