Overview

Homes and Horizons is an innovative partnership between Somerset County Council, Homes2inspire, part of the national charity Shaw Trust, and Somerset NHS and CAMHS.

Homes and Horizons aim to have two therapeutic education provisions in the county to support young people in the care of the local authority providing educational and therapy services on site.

The small scale, bespoke settings will support the education of 30 young people (predominantly key stage 3 & 4) across the two sites. Mental health professionals, support workers and teachers will provide a trauma informed environment for young people who have often had significant periods of absence from school and a history of multiple home placement breakdowns.

We want to break this cycle with cutting-edge provision which provides robust education experiences for the young people in Somerset who most need our support and improved life opportunities.

As a teacher you will design and deliver educational experiences to small groups or in one-to-one settings. Lessons will be planned considering students interests and barriers to learning to create engagement, understanding and fill students’ knowledge gaps.

The successful candidate will be an inspirational role model for the children and young people, while demonstrating the value of education, care, and development to achieve better outcomes. They will need to be flexible and adaptable and able to plan and deliver lessons across a broad range of curriculum areas.

They will deliver accredited learning to the young people at the education provision with a unique curriculum supporting children and young people to Relax, Explore, Practice and Stretch to allow young people to reconnect with education. In time the provision aims to support young people to transition back to their main education settings or prepare them for the next steps in their academic and vocational journey.

They will be expected to carry out the professional duties of a schoolteacher under the relevant sections of the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions document. Teachers should also have due regard to the relevant Teacher Standards. Teachers’ performance will be assessed against the teacher standards as part of the appraisal process as relevant to their role in the school.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The role includes but is not limited to:

· Teaching a range of academic subjects and qualifications as directed to a Good or Outstanding Ofsted rated level.

· Treat pupils with dignity, building relationships rooted in mutual respect, and at all times observing proper boundaries appropriate to a teacher’s professional position.

· To develop young people-centred teaching, learning and assessment strategies, which contribute to increased retention, achievement and progression.

· Take responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school.
