Job overview

Tower Hamlets
Our number one priority is education....

Tower Hamlets is a thriving, progressive Council in the heart of London serving a diverse urban population.  The Borough has earned an international reputation for excellence in education and an independent report in December 2013 concluded that it had ‘some of the best urban schools in the world’.  This remarkable transformation has seen GCSE results exceed the national average, an impressive proportion of young people going on to higher education, the completion of an ambitious building programme in secondary schools and more good/outstanding schools than any other borough.

The Council values the positive relationships engendered with our school, faith and business communities. This, along with strong school to school support, has contributed to the rapid rise in outcomes for students over the past 15 years.

The turnaround in school standards has been achieved through building strong partnerships with headteachers, governors, politicians, parents and faith leaders. There has been a forensic focus on data to help identify areas for improvement.  Tower Hamlets boasts a united and collaborative school community in which headteachers help each other and share best practice in the interests of the borough’s young people.

Reporting to the Corporate Director, the new Service Head will be expected to build on this excellent foundation and continue to drive up standards at all key stages. You will ensure an ambitious and inclusive approach for all our children and young people, including those who are vulnerable, and challenge all schools to bring about further improvements.   As a confident education professional, combined with headteacher experience, you will be passionate about improving life chances through excellent educational opportunities and understand the role of a local authority in supporting this.

The ideal candidates will demonstrate impeccable decision-making and outstanding leadership in one of the most exciting local education authorities in the country.
