At Brightstowe we teach young people to think mathematically. We train them to be systematic, spot patterns, test extremes, generalise and prove. We like to inspire them with the elements of mystery and surprise in maths. We believe mistakes are learning opportunities and good mathematicians are made and not just born. We love our subject because maths is art and it helps to make meaning of the world, not just because it’s useful. We’ve designed a brand new curriculum to reflect these values and meet the challenges of the new National Curriculum. Our students love it, and in our Academy it’s cool to be good at maths.

The role
You will be responsible for helping young people make exciting connections between what they learn in mathematics and the other STEM disciplines. Your goal will be to design and implement a strategy to exploit curriculum links leading to projects that students will work on simultaneously in all of their STEM subjects. You will help to develop collaborative links with local industry to help inspire young people about opportunities for further study and prepare them to compete for the most attractive employment opportunities in the STEM arena. You will also plan and deliver CPD for STEM teachers and lead on the latest insights from learning theory to ensure that staff are equipped to deliver a leading-edge STEM experience to students.
Our Academy is fortunate to have the latest technology available to support classroom teaching. For example, this year students began using motion sensitive technology to manipulate solid objects in an augmented reality environment. The only limit to what you can achieve in this role will be your own imagination. We are also growing rapidly to become the most popular choice for parents in this area. This year our specialist Year 7 Base will rise to full capacity for the first time. As a result, there are significant opportunities for career advancement within the Academy for professionals who are passionate, conscientious and committed to continually improving their teaching practice.
