About the department

Philosophy

We have a clear belief that Computer Science provides our pupils with the skills and knowledge required to equip them for the ever-changing modern world and supports learning across the wider curriculum.

Key Stages 3 & 4

At KS3, pupils receive a 50 minute lesson per week, we follow the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum of Computing which includes: computer components, networks, data representation and programming in addition to digital literacy. This highly challenging curriculum allows pupil to study Computer Science or Digital IT modules in year 9. Introducing pupils to key concepts and ideas, and building up key skills has proven to be successful in securing good outcomes for the department, making the OCR Computer Science GCSE and the BTEC Award in Digital IT popular with pupils.

Homework is an important part of the course. Pupils are given a range of tasks either as practical activities to develop their digital literacy or programming skills, or theory homework to prepare for the written component in exams.

Extra-curricular activities are an important part of the department’s curriculum and we are an active member of the Camden STEAM Hub. We run a number of activities, including a weekly KS3 Lego robotics club held on site or at the Camden Learning Centre, IoT study sessions at Samsung KX exhibition shop, and pupils in year 10 and 11 take part in interactive workshops at The National Computing Museum in Bletchley.

Key Stage 5

The school is planning to introduce A Level Computer Science (OCR) and a Level 3 BTEC Computing/ IT course at Key Stage 5 in September 2024 to meet the demand and needs of our diverse pupil body. This is a unique opportunity to be part of an exciting and growing curriculum area. The successful candidate will be expected to be instrumental in driving these developments; by working with the department team to shape an exciting and challenging curriculum that will ensure our pupils can attend the best Universities or successfully compete for sought-after apprenticeships.

The facilities

The Department is staffed by two dedicated IT/Computing teachers. The network is supported by a team of 2 dedicated technicians. The school has three main Computer Science/ IT teaching rooms all with SMART Interactive White Boards. There are other dedicated Cross-Curricular rooms with work stations and interactive whiteboards. There are also smaller clusters of computers around the school, including Art, Music, Design & Technology and the LRC. The Computer Science & IT has its own dedicated iPads, game consoles and two VR headsets which are put to use as part of their enrichment program.
