Teacher of Creative Arts - Creative and Digital Media

Job Purpose

The postholder will provide outstanding teaching, maintaining the high standards of the Collegiate. This job description is written at a specific time and is subject to change as the demands of the Collegiate and the role develops. The role requires flexibility and adaptability and the employees of the Collegiate need to be aware that they may be asked to perform tasks and be given responsibilities not detailed in this job description.

We would especially welcome qualified applicants with experience of delivering BTEC Creative Media at Level 2 and Level 3 and GCSE/A level Photography.

The Creative Arts Department

The Creative Arts Department at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate combines the skills and resources of our Art, 3D Design, Photography, Creative and Digital Media staffing and facilities, to offer a fantastic learning experience and a range of subject routes that go beyond the traditional subject choices.

Creative and Digital Media

We are an Arts Mark School where creative and digital media is an essential part of the creative arts department. We have a large range of well-equipped rooms staffed by experts in their specialist areas offering routes through fashion, fine art, photography, media and 3D craft allowing students to choose from many different areas of focus from fine art to photography and graphics. Media students have access to a range of digital applications on a Microsoft based system, including Adobe, and InDesign. In addition, there is a traditional dark room and a well-equipped photo studio with backdrops and lighting. Students have the freedom to explore their creativity in accommodation that is inspirational and well-resourced, and the work produced, which is often award winning, adorns the corridors around the collegiate inspiring the next generation of artists and designers. 

Students are introduced to art very early in the collegiate and are encouraged to explore their creativity through a range of 2D and 3D media and to experiment with analogue and digital approaches to realising their artistic intentions.

Through Key Stage 2/3 these skills are developed through a wide range of stimulating tasks and, because of the experience, many students choose to continue to GCSE level study and beyond.

Expectations

There are 30 x 55-minute lessons each week, with around 22 allocated to academic teaching. There is a Saturday Academy for the Arts which we are seeking to further expand to cover a wider range of Creative Arts options (and is available as one of the normal days of working or on a rota basis with other colleagues). In addition, a full-time teacher will be expected to offer enrichment activities after collegiate and be a form tutor following a structured programme led by the School Teams (KS3-5) for 3 x 55 minute sessions per week. Staff also attend directed time/whole collegiate training after school on a Monday to 515pm. We teach for 34 weeks in the academic year. We are open to applicants who would like to work part time.

Your duties and responsibilities are as follows:

Support for students

•  Utilise specialist skills, training and experience to support students
• Establish productive working relationships with students, acting as a role model and setting high expectations
• Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all students within the classroom and the collegiate environment
• Support students consistently, recognising and responding to their individual needs
• Encourage students to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage all students in activities
• Promote good behaviour and management of relationships with peers and staff
• Provide feedback to students in relation to progress and achievement
• Provide formative oral and written assessments through marking, prep and other forms of feedback, using this to inform future teaching
• Keep records of progress in the form of formal assessments and reports on the development, progress and attainment of students, as individuals and as groups of students to line managers and parents.
• Extra-curricular – we expect the postholder to work 5 days per week from a 7-day rota. This may involve regular weekend work either on a rota or a fixed basis during term time – hours to be discussed with the successful applicant.

Teaching

•  Be a highly motivated and proficient classroom teacher, demonstrating a commitment to high standards of teaching and learning, and offering all students an innovative and effective learning experience.
• To teach at least one of the following BTEC Digital and Creative Media Practice (level 2 and 3), A-level Photography, BTEC Art and Design Practice – with a focus on 3D design or design craft or photography, GCSE Photography, these can be combine with and of the following related subjects - A-level Art, Design and Craft/A-level 3D, A-level Textiles, A-level GCSE Art and Design, GCSE 3D Design, GCSE Graphics, GCSE Fashion/Textiles, KS3 3D Design/DT/Art/Photography, plus KS3 creative arts curriculum
• Be able to teach on a range of different platforms, physical in sketch books, and producing traditional art, design, photography and 3D design work. Digital producing work on a range of platforms such as Adobe (inc.In-Design and Photoshop), and Sketch-up.
• A willingness to continue to develop as a creative practitioner and teaching professional.
• Establish an appropriate learning environment, maintaining good order and discipline amongst the students, safeguarding their health and safety. 
• Help to develop resources for the department.
• Plan lessons, evaluating and adjusting lessons/work plans/schemes of work as appropriate.
• Monitor and evaluate students’ responses to learning activities through observation and planned recording of achievement against pre-determined learning objectives.
• Provide objective and accurate feedback and reports as required on student achievement, progress and other matters, ensuring the availability of appropriate evidence.
• Be responsible for keeping and updating records as agreed with the Heads of School/Year  
• Undertake marking of students’ work and accurately record achievement/progress.
• Promote positive values, attitudes and good student behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encouraging students to take responsibility for their own behavior.
• Administer and assess routine tests and invigilate examinations/tests.
• Communicate and consult with parents, outside bodies etc., as directed by the Heads of School/Year
• Provide guidance and advice on educational matters and on further education and careers

Support for the Curriculum

• Prepare schemes of work and lesson plans that ensure the needs of all students are met.
• Identify appropriate attainment and/or achievement targets, differentiating teaching as required.
• Monitor student standards and achievement against targets, ensuring that relevant individual and whole collegiate attainment/achievement targets are met.
• Monitor planning, curriculum coverage and learning outcomes.
• Monitor standards of student behaviour and application.
• Plan and implement intervention strategies where improvement needs are identified.
