Job overview

Part-time 0.6 - Maternity Cover

Forest Hill is an oversubscribed 11-19 school which exists to serve the local community through innovative teaching and a broad and comprehensive curriculum offer in state-of-the-art facilities. We have a strong record of academic success which combined with our Performance Arts’ specialism underpins the development of our boys all the way to our co-educational post-16 provision. Ofsted recently judged the school “outstanding” in many areas including leadership and behaviour.

We are seeking to appoint for September 2015 a well-qualified, innovative and enthusiastic temporary part-time teacher of Dance.

Dance is an integral part of our Performing Arts Specialism, and one of the key ways we seek to challenge the stereotypes held by young men. The Dance curriculum area is thriving with all students in KS3 having one Dance session a week and with many students taking GCSE and A-Level. Alongside this the extra-curricular and enrichment offer in Dance is comprehensive with various Dance companies, involvement in all the major Performing Arts showcases and a wide range of links with outside Dance and Performance agencies such as Trinity Laban and London Contemporary Dance. Dance lessons take place in our specialist Dance studio or one of our other performing arts spaces.

Our ideal candidate is

  • An outstanding teacher who combines a range of innovative teaching strategies with excellent relationships with young people
  • A team player who works well with others and is dedicated to the success of their students
  • Someone who looks for ways to improve themselves and the school and is not afraid of taking responsibility beyond their classroom

We will offer

  • The opportunity to work in an established and well-regarded school with a proven record of challenging the stereotype of underachieving boys in inner city London
  • A personalised CPD programme that offers a range of opportunities to broaden your pedagogical experience and which seeks to support you in developing yourself for future leadership roles
  • Modern, state-of-the-art facilities, including staff laptops and cutting edge technology

The post will suit an experienced teacher, or an innovative NQT with the desire to learn from an excellent team. The successful candidate will be required to teach Dance at KS3, 4 & 5. Informal visits are welcome - please contact the Head of Dance, Danielle Humphrey.

Apply online (www.foresthillschool.co.uk) to vacancies@foresthillschool.co.uk or through TES.

Closing date is Monday 13th April with interviews scheduled for Monday 20th April

Forest Hill’s ethos is aptly summarised in our motto Aspiring to Excellence Together. We are a community in which mutual support and a spirit of relentless ambition drive a desire to ensure that we constantly strive to surpass previous achievements. All community members are encouraged and expected to contribute to this culture thus ensuring that the creativity and evolution of our student offer is maintained. We are a performing arts’ school, but creativity does not simply apply to our performing arts’ subjects; it also applies to the academic curriculum in which we promote engagement, enquiry and ingenuity. We want our students to emerge from Forest Hill School as engaged citizens and leaders of the future, fully equipped to confidently enter a competitive world.

We communicate and reinforce the vision and ethos of the school community through our Core Values (https://foresthill.lewisham.sch.uk/motto-and-values/), which were developed in consultation with all stakeholders:

• Hard Work

• Ambition

• Respect

• Kindness

All aspects of life at Forest Hill is underpinned by these values, and we promote them as the prerequisites of academic excellence and success. The values also encapsulate a sense of pride in belonging to Forest Hill, something which is shared by all students and staff.

Ofsted report

Pupils study a broad and interesting curriculum. The school has carefully considered the important knowledge that they want pupils to study. In the sixth form, a wide range of A-level choices is supplemented by several different vocational qualifications. Within subjects, the chosen topics of study have been put together in a logical way. This helps pupils to build on their prior knowledge so they learn more and remember more over time. This means that, from the start, pupils are well prepared for the rigour of GCSEs and for sixth-form studies. Leaders also make sure that content is relevant and interesting for pupils.
