Education in the British Tradition

The British International School Istanbul (BISI) provides a wide range of educational choices for international families. We are a private, coeducational school providing British-style international education for 520 students of 40 nationalities between the ages of 2½ and 18.

The British International School follows internationally recognised curricula. The English National Curriculum makes later transition to other school systems straightforward. Following the IGCSE examination, completion of the International Baccalaureate programme brings access to the world's finest universities. We have excellent academic success. Primary SAT results and IGCSE results are well above average and tertiary entry by recent IB graduates includes such universities as British Columbia, Edinburgh, Middlesex, Michigan State, New York, Toronto, Warsaw, York and Goldsmiths College, London.

Turkey in general and Istanbul in particular are extraordinarily rich in geographical and historical sites. The School curriculum takes full advantage of this, with educational visits and exchanges organised annually within Turkey and abroad.

BISI is proactive about the welfare of students. Their academic, emotional and social well-being is the responsibility of everyone around them. Ultimately, we seek graduates whose reputation as scholars is matched by a balance of interests, social awareness, communication skills, individuality, poise and flair.

Foreign language instructors aside, our highly qualified and experienced teachers are native English speakers with training in the National Curriculum for England and Wales. These professionals create a challenging but caring atmosphere in which students become confident and develop their unique potential. This is a happy environment based upon good manners, respect of others and self-discipline.

A skilled, full-time Special Needs and Counselling Specialist supports student learning and pastoral care. Her role extends to School families and staff. This work is carried out across all campuses, providing an invaluable overview and whole-school continuity.

The School Motto

‘Eruditio Limites Permeat -
- Education Transcends Boundaries'
The motto links two fundamental values of the School. We hope our students will discover the commonalities in different national experiences and transcend any imaginary boundaries through education and friendship. The origin of the motto has a special significance for us. The Latin words and their English translation were devised by Mr Roger Short, British Consul-General and a Governor of the School. Roger's assassination in 2003 deprived Istanbul of a cultured and active leader. Roger embodied the qualities of the motto he found. Our award for outstanding achievement in the International Baccalaureate is now dedicated to his memory.

Whether as a new or prospective parent, I hope you find it informative, and that it addresses any questions you may have. The information here can paint only a broad and limited picture of the school. I do hope you will visit us if you can. I am always delighted to show visitors around, and to explain the rich and varied life created here. We are proud of our many achievements. Academic standards are high. All pupils are encouraged to strive for their best in planned learning opportunities provided by excellent teachers. We ensure that children experience a broad curriculum. Sport, music, art and drama feature prominently. We are strongly committed to partnerships between home and school. The learning of children is improved significantly when these links are effective. We are a ‘listening school’, and actively encourage parents to share their concerns with us on a regular basis.
