The School

The Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, which has its origins in the 13th Century and received its royal charter in 1562, is an 11-18 selective boys’ school with six forms of entry and a Sixth Form of 400. The school has a national reputation for high academic standards, for sport, music and drama and many other educational activities.

As an Academy, the school still plays its full part in the provision of grammar school education in Buckinghamshire, admitting on average the top 35% of the ability range. The Governors share the view of the County Council that the merits of grammar schools are such that they should continue in the future.

  • It is difficult to encapsulate the spirit of RGS in words, but suffice it to say that all who work here regard it as a very special school indeed.
  • The commitment to excellence is there, but alongside it is the sense of belonging to an exceptionally friendly community, where there is always genuine support for colleagues.
  • The History Department is proud to be a vital and exciting part of a thriving school.

To see the full range of activities undertaken at the school, we would encourage you to visit our website (www.rgshw.com).

Accommodation

The school is fortunate in being able to offer single accommodation in a house which is home to nine friendly RGS teachers; some of whom joined us as NQTs and are therefore able to help and encourage other NQTs and ‘away from home’ teachers. This house is just two minutes’ walk from the RGS and ten minutes’ walk to High Wycombe train station!

The Department

Examination results in the Department are of an exceptionally high order. The faculty is very well resourced and prides itself on a strong record of success based on a team of committed staff with a passion for teaching and learning.

With its origins in the 13th Century, the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe was granted a Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I in 1562. Much has changed in the 455 years since, but RGS continues to enjoy a reputation as one of the leading state selective schools in the country.

Whilst the majority of boys are day boys, boarding plays a unique and significant role in shaping and supporting the lives of young men at RGS.

Our Vision

Our vision is to be seen as world class, through offering those most naturally able, irrespective of their background, the best all-round education offered by any state school in the UK.

Ofsted report

“The Royal Grammar School is an outstandingly effective college with specialisms in language and in mathematics and computing. Staff are fiercely ambitious for their students. The overwhelming majority of parents strongly support the school's drive to give students an outstanding educational experience. Reflecting the views of many, a parent wrote, 'This is a truly excellent school.' Boarding provision also contributes well to the students' academic success. Most feel very privileged to have access to so many stimulating out-of-hours opportunities.”
