Job overview

The Governors wish to appoint up to two English teachers to join St Mary’s. We hope these roles will appeal equally to experienced English teachers looking to develop their careers in an outstanding school, as well as to new or less experienced teachers. St Mary’s is a great place to work and provides excellent job satisfaction, as it is a very supportive environment. CPD is very strong. There are opportunities for teachers to help develop teaching and learning across the school, working collaboratively with teachers from other departments, whether as coaches, researchers or SLEs. The working environment is, therefore, a very stimulating one for all staff and is an added attraction of these posts.

St Mary’s is a very successful, popular and happy school, rated Outstanding by the Diocese and Ofsted. We became an academy in 2013 and enjoy outstanding facilities in a new building which opened in 2011. We are a National Support School, increasingly engaged in school to school support, as well as a core partner in a Teaching School Alliance. Opportunities for professional development are, therefore, wide-ranging and an added attraction for potential new staff.

Within the school, English is a well-established and successful department with excellent results. In 2014:-

  • At GCSE 75% of students achieved grades A*-C.
  • 85% of students made expected progress with 33% exceeding it.
  • Expected progress has been SIG+ in RaiseOnline for 4 years in a row.
  • In A level English Language, 71% achieved grades A*-C and 14% achieved an A* or A grade.
  • In A level English Literature, 56% achieved grades A*-C and 33% achieved an A* or A grade.
  • Key Stage 3 results are very strong too, with very able cohorts in each year group.
  • Leadership, teaching and the climate for learning in English are all excellent.

At whole school level, St Mary's continues to perform very strongly. Highlights include:-

  • 3 Outstanding inspections.
  • Top 5 “Best 8” Valued Added score out of 150 north-east schools in 2014.
  • Top 100 most improved schools nationally, 2005-8, 2006-9 and 2009-12.
  • Top quintile ranking for 11 out of 12 measures in Ofsted’s Data Dashboard including English.
  • Heavily oversubscribed with a rising roll (900 in 2010 – 1200 in September 2015).

As with all of our appointments, we wish to appoint teachers with a passion for providing the best possible holistic education for all students, within a Catholic/Christian context. Applicants do not need to be Catholic to work here but the successful candidates would be expected to support our distinctive ethos.

The application pack is available to download from the TES website or e-mail the Headteacher’s PA, julie.patterson@st-marys.newcastle.sch.uk or write to her at the school address - Benton Park Road, Newcastle upon Tyne NE7 7PE.  (Tel: 0191 2153260)

Closing date: 9:00am on Monday 9th March.

The school is fully committed to safeguarding and the welfare of children and young people. This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.
