  • Do you really believe that non-selective schools can provide as high quality an education as any other school in the country?
  • Are you passionate about high quality teaching?
  • Do you want to work in a school where they ask every day ‘what is the best way to do this?’?
  • Is your own teaching outstanding, and do you have the skills and knowledge to help others develop their teaching?
  • Are you resilient, imaginative, thoughtful, conscientious and determined?
  • Do you treat staff and students the way that you expect to be treated yourself?
  • Are you continuously on the lookout for examples of outstanding practice which your institution can learn from?

Lister Community School is a large 11-16 comprehensive school at the heart of its community, and part of a soft federation with our 7 nearest primary schools. Student attainment is rising: our headline 5ACEM figure has risen from 38% in 2010 to 55% in 2013 and we were named in January 2014 as one of the 100 most improved schools. Our November 2013 Ofsted report spoke of the school’s ‘consistent focus on raising the quality of teaching and developing a culture of learning and high aspirations across the school’. We are determined to build on our recent Ofsted judgement and continue our journey to becoming an Outstanding school in the next two years.

We are determined to provide as good a quality of education as at any school in the country, and to measure ourselves against the best. Our staff regularly visit other schools as part of our Outstanding Practice Programme and this has developed the school’s ‘outward looking’ ethos. Our students are friendly, courteous, motivated and have high aspirations. The school benefits from a range of external partnerships including becoming the first partner school in the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Music Foundation and the Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust, and working in collaboration with Highbury Grove School in Islington.

As part of our continued focus on further developing the quality of teaching we are seeking to appoint a dynamic French Teacher to join our dedicated Modern Foreign Languages Faculty. The ability to teach French to GCSE standard is essential and the ability to also teach Spanish would be desirable but not essential. If you think you have the potential to become an outstanding teacher of French and can benefit from working with our dynamic team, email jobs@lister.newham.sch.uk for an application pack.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. This appointment will be conditional on successful pre-employment and enhanced CRB checks. Further details and an application form can be downloaded directly from the TES website or Lister’s website: http://www.lister.newham.sch.uk/vacancies or by contacting Beryl King (Office Manager) on 020 8471 3311. Completed applications must be returned to the school at the above address, or by email to: jobs@lister.newham.sch.uk.

About Lister Community School

Lister Community School is situated in Plaistow, East London, approximately 10 mins walk from Plaistow and Upton Park Underground stations.  We are also in close proximity to the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Westfield (Stratford) shopping centre. Please note we have no parking available onsite.

We are a specialist school in Music and Science.  We are a mixed comprehensive secondary school and welcome both students and staff from a diverse multicultural background.  With over 1,600 students, we are a larger than average school in the London Borough of Newham.  The school benefits from being located in new and purpose built accommodation on a single site with ample outdoor areas and the use of an all-weather sports pitch.

The school is led by a team of senior leaders who are enthusiastic and experienced and, alongside all staff, share a positive and united vision for the school’s future.  With an improved curriculum, vertical tutoring and house systems, Lister provides a well rounded and balanced experience for students.

Resource Provision for Deaf Children: Lister Community School hosts the Resourced Provision for secondary aged Deaf children in Newham. Specialist staff support students using a variety of communication modes such as BSL, SSE and Auditory Oral. Deaf students are taught alongside their hearing peers in mainstream classes for the majority of their lessons. The Deaf Support Department is made up of a large team of Communication Support Workers and Qualified Teachers of the Deaf who work with the deaf students in mainstream classes as well as small groups and 1:1. Deaf students may also have access to Deaf Awareness sessions and pre and post teaching.

Newham Community Learning:  Our school is part of Newham Community Learning, which exists in order to provide an excellent education for all young people in our community.  We are the only Trust to offer all-through provision from ages 2 - 16 within a single family of schools in Newham. Across our two primary and four secondary schools, all located in the west of the borough, we educate over 5,400 local children and young people, and employ a team of  close to 700 members of staff, the vast majority of whom live locally.

To view opportunities at all our schools, please see our Trust page on TES.

Train with us - we are delighted to partner with Teach First to deliver our School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme.  Teach First is a national charity that develops and supports teachers and leaders who are determined to make a difference where it is needed the most. As a training partner, we will be working with Teach First to deliver this one year teacher training programme, which enables participants to train and develop skills in the classroom.  It is ideal for people who are eager to learn on the job and make a difference in their community from day one.  Our Newham Community Learning SCITT Booklet has further information; please email traintoteach@ncltrust.net to find out more.
