Job overview

We are looking for a Geography specialist to join our thriving Humanities department from September 2015. The Humanities department, of which Geography is part, is an extremely experienced and supportive one. The department currently has five full time members of staff. We are also a lead partner school for a local Initial Teacher Training organisation and as such we are joined by three trainees during the course of the year. The department is innovative and dynamic in its approach with a relentless drive on improvement. We welcome applications from well qualified Geography specialists who are seeking a challenge in a supportive and high-performing environment. This role is suitable for an NQT who would be fully supported to complete their induction year. We are proud that our teachers work in an environment where they can teach enthusiastic, motivated and well behaved students in an atmosphere where high achievement and dedication is the norm.

Geography is a popular option subject with four groups currently studying at GCSE where we follow the AQA A syllabus. All students are provided with a set of core textbooks to support their study of the course. At Key Stage Three we have constructed a rich curriculum which places an emphasis on core knowledge. Students study a variety of geographical topics to give them a comprehensive understanding of the world and our place within it. As well as our exciting, demanding and varied curriculum, the Geography department offers a range of extracurricular opportunities for students including an annual Y11 Fieldwork visit to Dorset. Students value the high quality teaching they get at Bedford Free School and the successful candidate will join a department considered to be the core strength of the school.

BFS opened in September 2012 and is now heavily oversubscribed, reflecting our established popularity and reputation with local parents. We have now celebrated three sets of solid GCSE results that put us top in Bedford and amongst the best in the region. In the coming years we aim to become one of the top performing schools in the country and as we continue to develop, we are looking to recruit excellent teachers who share our values and beliefs. We now wish to appoint more outstanding professionals to join our team.

Our staff will:-

  • share our values of respect, honesty and high expectations
  • believe that every student, regardless of background  is capable of the highest level of behaviour and academic success
  • be expert in their subject

In return we offer well-motivated, polite and hard working pupils and the opportunity to join an exciting school as it begins its next phase of development. We believe in 'growing our own' staff and as such, there are always opportunities for further training and career progression. We have a reasonable approach to workload with our 'no marking' feedback policy, no requirement for formal lesson plans, and a large amount of professional autonomy.
