Thorns Community College is at the heart of its community. We recognise that each child is an individual, that all children are creative, that all children want to succeed.

Thorns Community College respects the individual needs of children; fosters a caring and ordered environment; and emphasises the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of each child.

“Celebrating Learning; Celebrating Success; Celebrating the Arts” is a strong statement of intent but Thorns Community College needs to establish itself at the heart of its community and generate, through high quality teaching, more success to celebrate.  It must be recognised for its excellent work in all areas of education and for its focus on all aspects of learning.  Everyone who belongs to Thorns Community College is a learner.  The only distinction is where each of us is at on our learning journey.

In order to achieve this we will strive to become:

An outstanding educational provider where each and every learner will be given the opportunity to flourish and develop their full potential.  Support for learning and the full range of additional needs will be recognised for its high quality and the ethos of inclusion will be at the heart of everything the college stands for.

A safe, caring and secure college where every person matters.  We will be recognised for the outstanding nature of our care, guidance and support.  Quality mentoring and a wide-range of non-teaching guidance staff will continue to develop and deliver this as will further investments in people and an unequivocal ‘disability equality scheme.’

An institution where learning comes first and will be the sole focus of all lessons with a constant emphasis on maximising learning time and potential.  Fundamental learning skills amongst all students will be a key foundation to developing life-long learning, which will be transferable to all lessons and situations.  Everyone, adults and students alike, is on a learning journey which has been personalised, routed and mapped out just for them.  This will be evidenced by an innovative professional development programme and forward looking curriculum which will empower all learners and encourage them to be active, independent participants in the learning process.

A college where students’ thoughtful behaviour is the outstanding contributory factor to their successful learning.  Positive behaviours are recognised, encouraged and rewarded in support of the Thorns Community College ethos.  This will be modelled and exemplified by all stakeholders to ensure others do the same.

A community of learners where achievement and attainment are valued and celebrated in a ‘can do’ culture and prejudice is constantly challenged.  Aspiration and ambition are the norm and high expectations are met with pride and a sense of achievement.

A centre of excellence and specialism for both training and the Arts where our facilities, experience and skills are used to promote and further these areas.  In the Arts, we will become a focal point and local leader, reaching out through collaborative work and partnerships with the community.  In training, we will be at the forefront of developing and sharing good practice to the benefit of all learners.

Our Core Values are:

Caring for each other in a safe environment
Working together
Getting the best out of each other
