Job overview

We would be willing to consider a small, temporary recruitment incentive for the right candidate

Great Barr School provides the perfect environment for an ambitious, driven Maths teacher to refine their practice and to gain in-depth knowledge and experience of strategies for improving progress.

Our large Maths Department is working hard to drive up the rate of progress our students are making. They have adopted a highly focused strategy which includes the introduction of new schemes of work focusing on opportunities for problem solving, discussion/collaboration, investigation and project based learning in line with Mike Ollerton’s approach to teaching and learning in Maths. The Leading Practitioner in Maths is providing Maths teachers with excellent opportunities for coaching to ensure they can all confidently lead innovative, focused lessons which promote high levels of engagement and rapid progress.

You will be joining a very highly motivated team at an exciting time for our school.

We invite applications from potential NQTs who are making good progress in their training (we have an NQT induction programme which has been rated as one of the best in the city) and from practising Maths teachers with a track record of teaching consistently ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ lessons and achieving strong pupil outcomes who are looking for opportunities to develop their careers in a large and vibrant school.

Teachers with a significant history of agency supply teaching and previous applicants need not apply.

Take a look at our website where you will find a video, the prospectus and a wealth of information and news stories about day to day life at Great Barr School.

If you have any questions about the post or wish to discuss making an application, please contact Steven Forster, HR Manager, on 0121 366 7825 or email at s.forster@greatbarr.bham.sch.uk.

Closing Date: Thursday 12 March 2015 (12pm)

About Us:

Fortis Academy is sponsored by Shaw Education Trust. We are based in north Birmingham and have a large, diverse and vibrant community of students. We have a well-established and very successful Sixth Form.

We pride ourselves on our strong ethos which values inclusion, good citizenship, mutual respect and collaboration.  We aim to provide a wide range of stimulating opportunities to expand our students’ horizons within an environment in which they feel safe and well cared for and in which they can achieve their best, develop self-confidence and flourish as individuals.  We encourage the active participation of parents/carers in their children’s education; only when the school, the child and parents/carers are working together will children excel.

Our large and established Sixth Form, which is rated as ‘Good’ by OFSTED, specialises in providing high quality Level 3 qualifications and Level 3 ‘applied general’ qualifications.  Year on year we are getting more students into the top Russell Group universities and are significantly exceeding the national average in doing so.  The breadth of subjects offered provides both our students and our staff with great development opportunities.

Our students are drawn from a diverse community and, as OFSTED have noted, there is “comfortable cohesion” and our students “work together and play together well.”  Visitors frequently comment on the pleasant, lively and friendly atmosphere in the school and the great sense of energy and purpose among staff and students.

The school has strong, mutually beneficial links with local schools, universities, employers and community organisations.

Working at Fortis:

We are very committed to the continuous professional development of our staff, and have worked hard to embed sophisticated, innovative strategies to improve teaching and pupil outcomes across the school.  Many of our staff have chosen to develop their careers at the school or have returned to more senior roles after a period working in other schools.

We have a highly developed and well established programme for providing NQT’s with the necessary support to achieve a successful and smooth first year in their new careers.  It has been described as ‘an exemplar of good practice’ and is frequently praised by our partner teacher training institutions.  Fortis Academy is an excellent place to build a career.
