The British International School of New York (BIS-NY) is a dynamic and nurturing community educating children in a stunning waterside campus in Manhattan.  We are proud to welcome families from around forty countries to our school, which delivers a distinct and innovative curriculum, combining the International Baccalaureate and English National Curriculum.  Alongside this rigorous and engaging curriculum, the school is also committed to providing a broad and inspiring wider programme in Sport, the Creative and Performing Arts and Community Service.  The warmth of relations across the school and close, constructive co-operation with families are other essential ingredients in what makes the school such a great place to work and learn.  September 2016 was the tenth anniversary of BIS-NY and this post arises because of the continued growth and development of the school.  The school opened a new Upper School programme from September 2018 offering Cambridge International IGCSE and A Level courses.  We are looking for talented, committed and enthusiastic individuals to join our exceptional team of staff and help make BIS-NY even better. 

We are looking to appoint a passionate and inspiring colleague to join the Arts Team and contribute to the design and delivery of a high quality Music curriculum using the English National Curriculum and the framework of the International Baccalaureate. The candidate will be working with Middle and Upper students. An understanding of inquiry based learning, a focus on process oriented music making experiences and a passion for developing creative confidence in young students is essential.  We are specifically looking to appoint an individual who possesses an open mind, a willingness to grow with the school and an enthusiasm and passion for teaching music to young people. All staff contribute to the co-curricular life of the school and a willingness to be involved in the arts, sport and/or community service would be an advantage.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach Music curriculum primarily to students across Middle and Upper school, in collaboration with IB MYP coordinator, and Cambridge International IGCSE and A Level curriculum
  • Work closely with the Head of Music to align school-wide music curriculum, plan for musical school events including concerts
  • Create and continuously update MYP Unit of Inquiry planners, and create resources to support MYP and Upper teaching 
  • Assessing student performances in a variety of ways and maintaining accurate student records of progress 
  • Working in tandem with the Inclusion team to support students with specific learning needs, in addition to general differentiation of lessons and work
  • Well organized with teaching material/lesson planning and time management
  • Opportunity to direct beginner level School Choir (flexible age ranges) 
  • Attend weekly faculty meetings and support all-school events
  • Undertake additional in school duties such as playground/lunch duty, or advisory positions


Person Specifications:

  • Relevant degree and qualifications
  • Energy, a genuine passion for music, and love for teaching children
  • Strong piano/guitar/vocal skills are important, specifically for accompaniment purposes
  • Personal instrumental or vocal skills 
  • Support wider Arts events in school 
  • Knowledge of or an eagerness to learn about the IB MYP and Cambridge International IGCSE and A Level
  • A working knowledge of prominent music education/methodologies (Kodaly, Orff, Dalcroze, Feierabend, etc.)
  • Willingness to be flexible to the ever changing aspects of school life (rolling admissions, non traditional teaching spaces, etc.) The ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload
  • A passion for working as part of a team, the desire to grow as an educator through collaborative experiences
  • Contribute to the ethos of the school and encourage high academic aspiration
  • Excellent communication and self management skills and be willing to adapt to the demands of a demanding workload
  • International perspective

Terms: 

  • Generous salary commensurate with experience (Range: $58,887 - $98,138 for qualified teachers)

  • Up to $2000 annual contribution to Professional Development costs
  • Relocation allowance available for overseas and out of state hires
  • The post becomes available from September 2024
