Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, committed and engaging Physical Education teacher to join our fantastic school. The successful candidate will work within an ambitious, vibrant and high performing department to instil a love of PE in all students.

The school has a fabulous reputation for sport, following much success in regional and national competitions in a number of disciplines and an enrichment programme that promotes mass participation alongside elite performance. We seek to appoint an ambitious, enthusiastic and highly motivated teacher of PE who consistently delivers good and outstanding lessons. The successful candidate will be able to promote the highest standards of achievement, show excellent commitment to extra-curricular sport and have a good knowledge and understanding of recent developments in teaching and learning. PE is a popular choice at Key Stage 5 where students can choose either BTEC Sport or A-Level PE. GCSE PE is also very popular. Expertise in a range of different sports is desirable; however at least one of cricket, football or rugby would be essential. The school provides a supportive environment in which both early-career and experienced teachers have excellent opportunities for professional development.

‘Pupils achieve highly at this stunning school’ - Ofsted, May 2023

Educating approximately 1250 students, The Bishop’s Stortford High School provides a single-sex education for boys in Years 7 to 11 and has a thriving mixed sixth form of close to 400 students, including 120 female students. As a result of excellent teaching, our students consistently achieve fantastic academic outcomes at both GCSE and A-Level. Behaviour is exemplary in lessons and around the school. which means the school has a calm atmosphere and students are ready to learn. "Pupils are polite, well-mannered and kind. and are ambassadors for the school, demonstrating excellent behaviours in all that they do.” (Ofsted 2023)

The school is relocating in the summer to a new site less than a mile from our current location. This exciting project will provide us with a fantastic new learning environment with a six-court sports hall, large all-weather pitch, three grass pitches and a strength & conditioning gym. In addition, we have a 35-acre off-site sports ground which contains a further 8 pitches and large changing facilities. Our vast list of extra-curricular activities and trips means students engage positively with school and represent our values with pride. Staff turnover is low, as they feel well-supported and enjoy working here, with many choosing the school for their own children.

TBSHS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the safety and welfare of all our children and expects staff to share this commitment. A Disclosure Barring Service check is required for all successful applicants.

Closing date for applications: Midday Thursday 16th May 2024

Interviews: W/c Monday 20th May 2024

(We reserve the right to interview and appoint before the closing date, should a suitable candidate apply)

Educating 1200 students, The Bishop’s Stortford High School provides a single-sex education for boys in Years 7 to 11 and has a large, thriving co-educational sixth form, with over one hundred girls on roll. Last year our students achieved 84% 5 A*-C (Inc. English & Maths) at GCSE and 55% A*-B at A-Level. We have a strong ethos, based on high expectations and standards for all, a committed and supportive staff who deliver high quality, engaging lessons and well-behaved students with excellent attitudes to learning.

In March 2017 Ofsted judged the school to be Outstanding in every category.

The school’s motto: ‘Respice, Aspice, Prospice’ means we must look to the past, the present and the future. We are keen to promote traditional values of courtesy, respect and good discipline, though we also recognise the need to provide all our students with the tools they require to flourish and succeed, both now and in the future, and help them develop the skills and qualities that will ensure they are ready for the challenges that lie ahead.  Our focus is on delivering high quality, engaging lessons and providing students with the care and guidance that allows them to succeed.

We combine this with our extremely successful and wide-ranging enrichment programme, in which all students are encouraged to participate, as we believe that leading rich and varied lives allows them to flourish.  We build positive relationships, which means all students are provided with the support they need to really engage with, and enjoy, school life.

We encourage an open flow of communication between school and home so that parents really feel in touch with their child’s development. TBSHS is an active member of the Bishop’s Stortford Education Trust (BSET) as we feel that collaborating locally brings many mutual benefits to each school.

We are fully committed to preparing our young people to be thoughtful, capable, responsible citizens of the future. We provide a ‘Truly all-round education’ and we firmly believe this to be a great school and a special place for children to learn and grow.
