Job overview

We are looking to appoint a well qualified, enthusiastic graduate to teach Physics (part time 0.5) across the full age range to A Level in this academically selective school. Early applications welcome, and for an informal discussion on the post please contact the school, and talk to Mr Lea (Vice Principal).

King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) is one of the most successful girls’ schools in this country with outstanding academic results and a large programme of extra-curricular activity. The school is an independent day school with 560 girls aged 11-18 and is part of the King Edward VI Foundation, which has eight schools in Birmingham. It is situated on a beautiful 50 acre campus in Edgbaston, which it shares with King Edward’s School. It is only three miles from Birmingham city centre and has excellent transport access by road and rail (the University train station is only a 10 minute walk).

Physics is taught as a separate science throughout the school. The purpose of the physics lessons in the Thirds (Year 7) and the Lower Fourth (Year 8) is to provide an insight into what physics involves, develop practical skills and facilitate an enjoyable and positive experience. The GCSE course is started in the Upper Fourth (Year 9) and is taken at the end of the Upper Fifth (Year 11). We have chosen to follow the International GCSE Physics as it is less prescriptive than other specifications and allows us to enrich the content using a wide range of resources. At A Level, we currently follow the Advancing Physics OCR course, but this is still under review for September 2015 with new specifications only recently ratified by Ofqual. In 2014, 78% of students achieved A*-B at A’ level and 91% of students achieved A*-A at GCSE.

We provide additional lunchtime sessions for students who need help with particular topics or girls who are preparing for the Physics Olympiad or Oxbridge entry. A significant number of girls gain places to study Physics and Engineering at University and students are offered places at Oxbridge on a regular basis.

Girls have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. These include talks by visiting speakers, trips to places of scientific interest and participation in competitions such as ‘Extreme Physics’. We have a seismometer that continually monitors earthquake activity, and many events are recorded around the world each year. Recently, we have built a cosmic ray detector in conjunction with the University of Birmingham and data are currently being analysed with the intention of publishing in a scientific journal.

Astronomy activities are often organised and students are able to follow the GCSE Astronomy course through guided independent study. On average, 10 students take the astronomy GCSE and results have been outstanding. The school has its own observatory. For the last six years, we have participated in European projects funded by the European Union with schools from Rome, Lyon and Amsterdam using Astronomy and Physics as themes and this year were pleased to welcome 41 students to the school and 9 members of staff.

The department has four experienced members of teaching staff, two of whom are part time. The department has three laboratories and we benefit from excellent laboratory technician support.

Application Procedure

If you wish to be considered for this post, please complete an application form giving full details of your qualifications and experience and the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two referees and send it, together with a letter to the Principal outlining the reasons for your application by 9 am on Tuesday 31st March 2015. Interviews will take place provisionally on Thursday 16th April.
