Job overview

Highgate is looking for an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher of Politics, starting in September 2024. The position would suit an experienced teacher or an ambitious and creative entrant to the profession.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in Politics, or a related degree such as PPE, International Relations, etc. from a university with an excellent reputation for Politics. Applicants should demonstrate a profound and continuing academic interest in their subject and an enthusiasm for sharing this passion with pupils and colleagues. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to professional development, an enthusiasm for learning and a willingness to experiment, as well as the ability to reflect deeply on their practice. A genuine interest in the School’s academic extension programme will be an added recommendation.

The successful applicant will join an experienced department of six teachers who teach over 60 pupils in Highgate’s Sixth Form. Politics is one of the most popular subjects at A Level. The pupils follow the Edexcel specification, which covers UK Politics, Political ideologies, and US Politics. Outcomes in A-Level Politics are excellent, and well above national averages: in 2023, our Politics cohort of 34 achieved 59% A* and 94% A*/A; in the same academic year 20 pupils applied for Politics or a Politics related degree at university. Pupils regularly take up places at Oxford and Cambridge, as well as at overseas universities.

The Politics department runs a weekly programme of extension classes to Year 12 pupils (often collaborating with other Sixth Form departments) in the Lent term, introducing pupils to topics outside the scope of the A-level curriculum. This programme continues in Year 13 as a more bespoke mentoring programme for all Sixth Formers who intend to pursue Politics, or a related discipline, at university.

Colleagues in the department also have a significant co-curricular footprint, including the popular current affairs focused Masaryk Society (which attracts over 30 pupils from years 9 to 13 every week), the Lower School Politics Society, the annual pupil-led publication The Arbiter, delivering academic lectures and taster lessons to Year 10 and Year 11 pupils, and running mock elections and referendums.

The department is well equipped and resourced, with its own classrooms and dedicated office, which is shared with colleagues in the Economics and History of Art departments. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards. Members of the Politics Department can and do teach History or Economics, though the ability to teach another subject is neither a requirement, nor a recommendation, for this post.

About Highgate School

Established in 1565, Highgate is now one of the UK’s leading co-educational independent schools, with around 1,700 pupils aged 3-18.

Academic excellence

Academic standards at Highgate remain high, as our most recent exam results demonstrate. In 2023 over 50% of all our GCSE entries were graded 9, and 78.9% were 9 or 8. Within our Sixth Form, in 2023, 46.5% of all our exam entries were awarded an A* at A level (or Pre-U equivalent) and 82.8% were A* or A. In 2023, 30 pupils matriculated at either Cambridge or Oxford colleges, whilst others took up places at prestigious Art, Architecture and Medical schools. Every year, the vast majority of our leavers enter Russell Group universities or other elite Higher Education establishments, including in the US and Canada.

Beyond the classroom

Alongside their studies, Highgate pupils are offered a wide range of co-curricular activities which enhance both their childhood experience and their future aspirations. We are also exceptionally fortunate when it comes to sport with extensive facilities, excellent staff and a wide range of activities available.

At Highgate, we encourage social responsibility through our charity work, both locally and further afield. For example, we are the principal education sponsor for the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham and support Great Lakes High School in Uganda.

Location

Our School is situated in one of the most attractive and popular areas of North London, a short distance from central London and adjacent to Hampstead Heath. We endeavour to be a sustainable school and are well served by good public transport links.

Management

Our Head, Mr Adam Pettitt, leads our Senior School and is also responsible for the overall direction of our Pre-Preparatory and Junior Schools.
