Job overview

Skegness Grammar School is a selective co-educational day and boarding secondary school. We are a vibrant school community where students’ behaviour and attitudes to learning are outstanding.

Skegness is located on the edge of an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Lincolnshire Wolds and the area offers affordable housing and an enviable quality of life. Opportunities to assist with accommodation by becoming a resident tutor at our small and welcoming Boarding House will possibly be available for the appropriate candidate(s). This would further embed you in the life of the school and provide excellent opportunities for personal and professional development.

We have two exciting opportunities to become part of a creative, forward thinking school, dedicated to delivering high academic standards, allowing every child to achieve their full potential. We are seeking to appoint ambitious and enthusiastic teachers who can demonstrate outstanding classroom practice. All our teachers must have a commitment to inspiring our students through imaginative and creative teaching and learning. You will also have the prospect of being challenged by the excellent opportunities available for teaching highly motivated and academic A Level students.

Following an Ofsted inspection in May 2014, we are delighted to report that Skegness Grammar School is a Good school. Key findings reported “since becoming an academy, examination results have improved impressively”, “attainment in 2013 GCSE examinations was high, and students made better progress from their starting points than is seen in most schools”. Furthermore, this year we are delighted to report a total of 92% of students achieving five or more A* to C GCSEs, including Math and English – the second successive year the school has surpassed the 90% landmark. RAISEonline data has moved forward significantly in the last 3 years, showing Skegness Grammar is now a school which “adds value” to its students’ education. In addition, the A Level results achieved 60% of passes at grade A* to B, with 50% of students applying to Russell Group University.

Two Teachers of Science - Start Dates: June 2015 Maternity Cover for Biology, 1 September 2015 Chemistry Teacher.

We are seeking to appoint two qualified teachers of Science, one permanent Chemistry specialist and one Biology specialist to cover maternity leave.

Successful candidates must actively engage with students and take an interest in their development and progression. The ability to teach all three science disciplines would be beneficial. Candidates will be expected to teach A Level in their specialism.

Successful candidates will join a strongly-led science team with the commitment and vision to achieve and deliver high academic standards and an outstanding learning experience for every child. There is also a very supportive team ethic, which enables colleagues to develop their skills across all three science disciplines.

As part of the David Ross Education Trust, successful candidates will have access to excellent CPD and opportunities to develop their career within the Trust. The Trust prides itself on broadening horizons and offers numerous opportunities for both staff and students to do so.

For further details and an application pack please contact Alice Icely, School Business Coordinator, on telephone number (01754) 610000 or e-mail enquiries@sgs.lincs.sch.uk.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 18 March 2015, with interviews being held soon after.

Applicants should note that the school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All successful applicants will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure Check by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

About Skegness Grammar School

Located in Skegness, Lincolnshire, The Skegness Grammar School is a co-educational grammar school. First opened in 1483 by the founder of Magdalen College Oxford, William de Waynflete, the school has operated on its current site since 1933. After spending some time as a grant-maintained school, it converted to academy status in 2012, and is under the sponsorship of the David Ross Education Trust, a multi-academy group responsible for the running of a number of schools across the country. The school is smaller than average, with around 650 students.

As a grammar school, admission to Skegness is selective on the basis of academic achievement, with an entrance examination being required of students in order to gain admission. While the school sixth form is mostly made up of students from the lower school, around 25 places are available for students from other schools, with admission being made here based on school reports and GCSE results. Our sixth form cohort averages at around 130 students.

A sound conscious is a wall of brass

At our grammar school we use the rhetorical power of “three” and simple inclusive messaging to make our values have power. Below are our three key values:

Knowledge, Fairness, Practice.

Our staff:

· share our values and high expectations

· serve our hard-working scholars equally

· advocate our evidence-informed SGS Way

Ofsted

“Leaders, staff and those responsible for governance work together effectively, with a common purpose to keep improving all aspects of the school.”

“Pupils are polite and courteous to each other and adults. They know how to behave well and understand why good behaviour is important. They conduct themselves very well in lessons and during social times. Low-level disruption in lessons is not tolerated, allowing pupils to focus on their learning.”
