Job overview
Ref No: SES989
Are you an enthusiastic, motivated and energetic Scientist able to plan and deliver high quality, innovative and inspirational lessons that engage students and develop a passion for Science across all key stages?
St. Edward’s is a thriving, successful, all ability, oversubscribed joint Roman Catholic – Church of England mixed 11-18 Voluntary Aided comprehensive school, offering opportunities for rewarding teaching from Key Stage 3 to GCSE and A-level. There are 1088 students on roll including 165 in the sixth form. The excellent quality of the relationships between all members of the school community - teaching and support staff, students, parents and governors - is a particular feature of the school.
Foremost we are looking for an excellent Science teacher and would welcome applications from all Science specialisms. In order to maintain a balanced department, we would ideally like to recruit a Chemist or Physicist but an outstanding teacher with any Science specialism would be encouraged to apply.
From September 2015, Key Stage Three Science will be taught across Year 7 – Year 9, to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum whilst also developing scientific skills. The department is currently involved in a national pilot called ‘Let’s Think’, which is a scheme to develop cognitive ability, group work and independent thinking of Key Stage Three students.
From September 2015, most students in Key Stage Four will follow the AQA GCSE Core and Additional Science route (specification A), whilst a smaller number of more able students complete Triple Science.
A small number of current Year 10 students will be completing a BTEC Science Qualification in the summer of 2016 but the Department does not plan to continue with this course as it will not feature on the list of qualifications approved for performance tables in the future.
At Key Stage Five, the Department offers A Level’s in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There are also close links with A Level Psychology and A Level Health & Social Care.
The Department is well resourced and offers the successful candidate a welcoming and supportive team. There are three Science technicians to support to delivery of practical work and a good range of experienced Science teachers to support a new colleague on their professional journey.
Applications are equally welcomed from newly qualified teachers and experienced staff.
