Lasswade High School is the largest secondary school in Midlothian with a roll of approximately 1400 students and growing. The school’s catchment area covers the towns of Bonnyrigg, Loanhead, Rosewell and surrounding villages. The school also receives several placing requests as a result of its strong reputation from within and beyond Midlothian. Lasswade has a strong record as a school and provides a wide range of opportunities for learners.

Bonnyrigg is a small town in Midlothian a little over six miles south east of the centre of Edinburgh. It forms the south eastern part of a larger settlement created when it merged with Lasswade. In more recent times Bonnyrigg has thrived because of its proximity to Edinburgh. Its centre is less than two miles by road from the Edinburgh bypass and this is one of the factors that have caused significant amounts of new housing to be built around the edges of the town in the last decade leading to a quite dramatic growth in school roll. There are also very good public transport links with Edinburgh and, looking ahead, nearby Eskbank will regain a railway station when the Waverley Line from Edinburgh to the Borders is reopened, planned for 2014.

The brand new Scottish Futures Trust £37m Lasswade High School incorporates a new community hub with library, leisure centre, nursery, computer hub, conference suite, swimming pool and state of the art sports facilities. Phase 2, completion of external works, will see a new multi-use games area comprising grass and all-weather football, hockey and rugby pitches and completion of extensive car parking.

The school has over 90 classrooms and high quality facilities. The school has very close and successful working relationships and transition arrangements with its cluster primary schools and nurseries; the quality of this joint working has been recognised by Education Scotland who also highlighted strong community partnerships.

The school is extremely well resourced with ICT equipment. Every classroom has access to interactive whiteboards and projection facilities and the school is well equipped with i-Pad technology and wi-fi. All classrooms are resourced to a very high standard equipped with smartboards and state of the art technology. The school run a very successful Continuing Professional Development programme for all teachers. The school is famed for its extra-curricular provision including numerous sports, as well as cultural and artistic opportunities for students. There are also numerous clubs and societies in which the students are encouraged to be involved. The school is proud to have maintained an Eco Schools Green Flag for over 10 years. The school places a high value on teacher participation in extra-curricular activity and also on its extensive school trip programme. In relation to global education, the school is nationally recognised for a 10 year partnership programme with Shanghai.

The school also has an extremely supportive and vibrant Parent Council. There are several placing requests outwith the catchment area and a number of senior school international students. As stated above, we have a partner school in Shanghai and teach Mandarin as part of the Modern Languages curriculum.
