Job overview

Hours of work: There is some flexibility with the hours but core hours are likely to be 9am – 3pm for two or three days per week (term-time only)

We are looking for a flexible, creative individual to provide 1:1 support to ensure the full inclusion of a child in Year 1 who has autism and communication difficulties.

The role is based at a small, independent primary school and will entail working closely with the class teacher, TA and will be supervised by the SENCo. It is a role that would suit a graduate, someone who is looking to gain experience before applying for a PGCE or perhaps an experienced teacher wishing to move into SEN.

Duties include:

  • modelling and teaching age-appropriate social skills
  • adapting the class teacher’s plans as necessary to ensure the pupil is able to access the learning
  • preparing and creating resources
  • implementing programmes devised by external agencies e.g. SALT, OT
  • helping the child develop strategies to deal with sensory overload issues
  • leading focus group activities
  • providing support at playtimes and lunchtimes
  • keeping accurate records and liaising with parents and other professionals as required

Selection for interview will depend upon applicants providing evidence of:

  • experience of working with young children with autism (D)
  • the ability to work independently (E)
  • a readiness to learn and apply new skills and strategies (E)
  • a high level of organisation (E)
  • being able to be firm but fun and with high expectations for attainment (E)
  • an excellent standard of spoken and written English (E)
  • a solution-focused approach to problem solving (E)
  • an understanding of how ABA is used with children who have autism (D)
  • experience of supporting learning in a mainstream school (D)
  • experience of working with therapists e.g. SALT, OT, ABA (D)
  • qualified to at least NVQ level 3 or equivalent (E)
