Job overview

Term Time Only

Harris Primary Academy Shortlands is a new, two-form entry school which opened in September 2014 in Bromley with our first Reception cohort. We believe that every child is unique and that each deserves the opportunity to be happy, feel valued and experience success. The school will increase in size by two classes each year. We are currently based in temporary accommodation in Westmoreland Road but will be moving to our new school in Shortlands next year.

At Shortlands, our Teaching Assistants play a key role in supporting children with their learning and development. They work closely with class teachers to understand the learning that the children need to achieve and are responsible for working with individual pupils or groups to enable them to make excellent progress. Specific training around phonics and maths is also offered so that TAs can lead their own groups and interventions. TAs are also expected to support teaching staff with their planning, preparation and assessment activities.

Teaching Responsibilities include:

  • To support children with their learning and development during lessons or free-flow activities as directed by the class teacher
  • To assess and record children’s attainment and progress
  • To lead small group sessions and interventions according to teacher’s planning

Other responsibilities include:

  • To promote the general progress and well-being of pupils in your class/group
  • To maintain high standards of behaviour among pupils through the use of the Academy’s behaviour policy
  • To participate in administrative and organisational tasks relating to the duties above
  • To supervise pupils during playtimes
  • To participate in Performance Management activities and also further training and professional development sessions as they arise

About Harris Primary Academy Shortlands

School summary

Harris Primary Academy Shortlands opened in September 2014 in order to provide additional, high quality primary places for local families. We are part of a Federation of schools with an established track record in Bromley and across London. The Harris Federation Primary Team provides a great deal of support to our staff, helping give pupils the highest quality education in a safe and nurturing environment.

We believe that every child is unique and that each deserves the opportunity to be happy, feel valued and experience success. Our ethos at the academy is that all children can achieve: it is our job as educators is to do everything possible to enable this to happen. We are delighted to be getting a brand new building for our school, which will be a bright, modern and welcoming place for children to be.

Academy Ethos

Our aim is to make sure that, from the first day of their education, our pupils have a truly happy experience of school. This means teaching them to become confident learners and nurturing each child’s personality and character.

Whatever a child’s background or starting point, we want to make sure that they finish Year 6 with the academic skills, social skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. Every lesson at our school is creative and there is plenty of time for children to think, to play, to discover and wonder.

Each child is taught in the way that suits them best and we step in quickly if a change is needed. For some children, this might involve one-to-one support if they are finding something difficult and for others it could mean stretching them more to keep them interested.

Our school is relaxed and comfortable but pupils know that good behaviour is expected of them and are taught to respect each other and their teachers. They are frequently praised and rewarded for trying their best and for being kind, hard-working and well-behaved.

Our school is friendly and welcoming and we always make sure that every pupil has at least one friend.
