Job overview

Do you want to be part of a team that will help inner-city children to do the seemingly impossible in Maths? You do not need a Maths degree!

Michaela Community School is an exciting new free school that opened in September 2014 with 120 pupils. A young, dynamic and energetic team, our intention is to transform the lives of children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

In September 2015 we will have 240 pupils, years 7 and 8. As we are growing every year (840 pupils at full capacity including a Sixth Form), there will be a lot of opportunities for promotion and development either as a teacher, or within the support staff.

As a Maths Teaching Fellow, you will take small classes of 1 to 6 pupils, teaching them numeracy and arithmetic using Direct Instruction pre-planned resources. These are high quality, detailed lesson plans which are an excellent introduction to teaching. You will also be assisting generally in the mathematics department with administration, co-ordination and resourcing. Depending on your experience, subject knowledge and confidence you could be given significant freedom to innovate and create your own resources and lesson ideas. You will work closely with our Maths teachers inside and outside lessons to maximise pupils' learning in mathematics.

We currently have graduates with English and Politics degrees doing this role. You do not need a degree in Maths. As long as you are bright and self-sufficient, you will pick it up very easily.

We aim to achieve 5 GCSEs with English and Maths for 100% of our pupils. If you want to work in an environment where you will really make a difference, Michaela is for you.

You will join a teacher team currently at 6 people, growing to about 11. We are closely knit and are very supportive of each other. Staff really love working here! You would be joining our Michaela family.

Michaela Community School is an exciting and successful free school that opened in September 2014 in Wembley, and is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. You may have heard of us: our Headmistress, Katharine Birbalsingh, is often in the news saying things that others find controversial but that we think are common sense. In 2023, our Progress 8 at GCSE was 2.37, the highest Progress 8 in the country. Nearly three quarters of our GCSE papers achieved a 7 to 9 grade. We also got 94% grade 5s in English and Maths. Our A level results were equally impressive with three quarters of our A-Level exams graded A* or A, and 75% of students went on to Russell Group universities, including Oxbridge, Imperial and LSE.

The ambition of our vibrant and energetic team is to transform the lives of all children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of us are Teach First Ambassadors. Some of us are not. All of us want to change the world by showing that a child’s home circumstances don’t have to be a barrier to exceptional success.

Ms. Katharine Birbalsingh
