Queen Alexandra College is a national Residential College for the vocational education of students with a visual impairment and/or other disabilities, such as autism and learning disabilities.

We are seeking a tutor who will join us on a permanent basis. The post holder will have responsibility for the GCSE provision, as well as some functional skills English delivery.

The post holder will be expected to maintain effective data related to individual learner targets, progression and achievement. You will also ensure the needs of the learners are met, and therefore should be able to utilise effectively multiple and diverse teaching and learning strategies. With the ability to set and mark assignments, you will also have up to date knowledge of Ofsted requirements.

Candidates must demonstrate enthusiasm and drive to foster a positive learning environment and also be able to contribute effectively within a teamwork environment.

The successful candidate will have been educated to degree level (minimum 2.2) as well as hold a relevant teaching qualification

Previous experience of delivery of Functional Skills English and recent experience of teaching GCSE English is essential, while A level experience is desirable.

Queen Alexandra College is a highly regarded National Specialist Residential College for the education of students with visual impairment and/or other disabilities, such as autism and learning difficulties.

Queen Alexandra College is located on a pleasant eight acre site in Harborne, a suburban area four miles southwest of Birmingham City Centre. The College was established by Birmingham Royal Institution for the Blind (Brib) and has a long and distinguished history of providing education for blind and visually impaired students since 1848. Until the mid 1990’s the College only enrolled students who were visually impaired. From the mid 1990’s, the College also catered for students with other disabilities. This has resulted in a student mix which is typically 60% visually impaired and 40% other disabilities.

Queen Alexandra College currently has 110 LSC funded students, aged 16-25, studying at levels from Entry Level through to Level 3. The classes are typically composed of about 8 students with one lecturer and one or more learning support assistants (LSAs). The College also has 30 RTU funded students, aged 18-60, on work preparation programmes. The College currently has 25 lecturers and 31 LSAs.

Queen Alexandra College has residential accommodation for up to 110 students and accommodates students in 5 hostels on campus, 1 hostel in the local community and 10 houses in the local community. Each hostel has its own residential team leader and a team of residential support workers. The College employs 163 staff (140fte) and has 9 volunteers and 6 oversees volunteers.

Queen Alexandra College has excellent, well equipped teaching and learning facilities. The campus is fully networked and all classrooms have up-to-date PCs, interactive whiteboards, a wide range of software and high speed internet access.
