English Civil War Battles

(0)
The English Civil War The aims of this lesson are to analyse the Battle of Marston Moor and evaluate how the New Model Army won the battle, as well as to question if Parliament decided to kill the king from the start. Therefore this lesson comes in two parts. This first lesson focuses on how the two sides fought in the Civil War. Students learn about the musketeers and pikemen, before analysing their role in the Battle of Marston Moor. The students take on the job of Oliver Cromwell and make key decisions to win the battle, gaining points as they go along. However they must be careful not to make mistakes and lose the battle with catastrophic consequences for Parliament and the New Model Army. The second part of the lesson looks at an alternative view of the Civil War. Was the decision taken to kill the King early on, or did Parliament arrive painstakingly at this decision over time. Students plot this on a graph before reaching and justifying their own conclusions, using some argument words for help if required. A lightbulb is posed at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout to show the progress of learning. The resource includes retrieval practice, suggested teaching strategies and differentiated materials, and comes in PowerPoint format if there is a wish to adapt and change.

Spanish Civil War Propaganda

This lesson teaches students about the significance of propaganda in the Spanish Civil War, has them analyse as a class different propaganda and ends with their own creation of a propaganda poster. It also includes TOK connections. In this lesson, a powerpoint is provided in which students will learn about what propaganda is and its key significance to the Spanish Civil War. As a class students will analyse different propaganda posters using a handout that has students address the OPCVL (origin, purpose, content, values and limitations) of each source. Students will also watch a peice of the Simon Schama’s Power of Art to highlight the importance of Picasso’s work during the Spanish Civil War. Students will work together to analyse Spanish propaganda using a virtual poster gallery. They will be asked to analyse these posters to answer a variety of questions regarding the posters they see. The questions work to build their understanding of (1) Values and Limitations of sources (2) Bias in Propaganda (3) symbols, messages and slogans used to encourage support. Once students have a clear understanding of how propaganda was used in the Spanish Civil War, students will create their own propaganda poster.

The Chinese Civil War

Use the British government sources in this lesson to explore the complicated reasons behind the Chinese Civil War and its outcome, including party ideology, propaganda, fighting tactics, and power struggles. In 1940s China, two parties were fighting for power. On one side was the ruling nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) party, led by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. On the other was the opposing Chinese Communist Party (CCP), led by Mao Zedong. During the Second World War, both parties banded together to fight off Japanese occupation. However, after the war, peace talks between the two quickly broke down. The fighting between the two parties became ongoing before escalating into civil war. The civil war was eventually won by the CCP in 1949. Mao declared the founding of the People’s Republic of China on 1 October 1949. Chiang Kai-shek, meanwhile, fled to the island of Taiwan, where he continued to rule.
