36 pages of flashcards related to the theme of explorers and adventurers. Each flashcard has a colour large card and small matching card. Flashcards show things that an explorer or adventurer may take with them on their travels such as a compass, map, pair of boots and tent. Flashcards also show activities such as walking, hiking, climbing and fishing. The flashcards have a number of uses including speaking and listening, matching, reading, adding to displays and visual aids. Cut and laminate and then the flashcards will be available for reuse. A nice activity is to have a case or rucksack (real or a paper outline). Children can decide where they are going on their travels and pack what they need.

This is a fully resourced scheme of work adapting resources from variety of freely shared sources. The majority of resources were adapted from AllyUganda's fantastic Adventure and Exploration SoW - https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/sow-geography-and-adventure-6434814 I am sharing these lessons and resources to help others with their planning. Learning Matrix - I currently use these to record student progress over the term. Students put them in the front of their books and the criteria is highlighted yellow as they achieve it. If I'd like them to try and do a particular criteria it is highlighted pink, once achieved it is ticked off. Set 1 completed the SoW as a project, they used the learning matrix as a guide and provided feedback to one another at the end of the term using the project feedback sheet.

This SOW is a fun way to introduce non-fiction reading to students with little experience of it. It uses extracts from non-fiction travel writing from explorers from a diverse background and uses places from across the world to teach reading and writing skills. Loosely following Nellie Bly’s trip around the world in 72 days, this scheme of work should: encourage students to engage with a global perspective on literature; allow students to engage with explorers from diverse backgrounds; teach students valuable reading and writing skills. Need to Know Learning Matrix I use these to assess student understanding and progress through the term and to provide quality feedback without the need for excessive comment writing. I simply put the matrix in the front of the students book, every time I mark their books I highlight the relevant criteria in one colour (usually yellow) and criteria I would like them to attempt in DIRT in another (usually pink). Once the criteria to attempt is achieved I simply tick it off on the matrix. In their books I will write WWW and list the codes for the criteria achieved. I will then draw steps to indicate how to level up and write the corresponding codes of criteria I want them to attempt. The Need to Know questions are based on the lessons & learning objectives over the term, which are also used to create the coded success criteria. I find this technique reduces the time I spend marking books however allows me to provide quality feedback and to clearly see progress over the term. It's great for outline the SoW and encouraging independent learning. Hope it's of use.

After doing “Hello World!” one of the first tasks set by many old school programmers is designing a classic text-based adventure game. Here is a six-lesson scheme of work to allow students to explore this idea and design their own game in Python. This can easily be modified to another programming language if you want (but the example files are in Python).

’Read and Respond’ unit to support home learning in English and Literacy, Year 6 - Week 8: Explorers and Adventurers. This resource includes an electronic set of plans for parents for English and Literacy in Year 6. These newly created exciting ‘Read and Respond’ units will support home learning in English and Literacy. The ‘mini units’, available for Years 1-6 inclusive, provide daily English lesson plans and have been designed for you to send home to parents on a weekly basis. (Reception guidance for Literacy is also available, though in a slightly different format). All the plans use text extracts freely downloadable from LoveReading4Kids, Oxford Owl or websites with free audio recordings. Week 8 topic for Year 6: Explorers and Adventurers. It is suggested that each unit is sent to parents with an accompanying letter as a way of the class teacher personally introducing the unit of work. This will provide the teacher with the opportunity to address any particular sections of the plan, provide supporting materials (e.g. a writing frame) where appropriate and/or make reference to any prior learning. Due to popular demand, the Primary English and Literacy team have created a second overview of units to support schools, teachers, parents and children. This follows on from an overview produced for Summer 1 including 6 weeks of plans for Reception to Y6. You may not have used the full suite yet due to this being a 5 week half term! The Summer 2 overview includes 4 weeks of plans from Reception to Y6 which can be used at home or in school. As in previous weeks, an example letter is included which teachers can send to parents in order to provide additional guidance, or to tailor the units to particular classes.
