The boards were originally designed in A3 to work especially well with larger groups but you can scale it down to print in A4 if required or preferred. There are 6 game boards, two for each level of challenge, indicated with a star system, with one star being the least challenging. The one star version includes only unit fractions of small numbers. The two star version includes fractions of larger two-digit numbers, while the three star version progresses to fractions of three and four-digit numbers. Students work strategically as pairs against pairs or one against one to get four correct answers in a row - horizontally, vertically or diagonally. They roll a dice each time to decide from which column to pick a calculation (the columns are numbered 1-6). If there are no calculations left in the column whose number they have rolled, they either skip a go or roll again (depending on the rules you choose). Student write their answers on the board with a dry-wipe marker. They can either use a different coloured marker to record answers on the board or add an initial or symbol if using the same colour as their opponent. Answer keys can also be printed for student checking. The Debate Game

This is a great game to play in pairs or with the whole class. It really helps pupils to use persuasive language while improving their speaking and listening skills. They also love it. For Pairs You need 2 dice. The first player throws a dice for the horizontal and the second player throws a dice for vertical. You then choose who is for and who is against each statement. I usually choose the first round then the second round is chosen by whoever lost the first round and so on. Each pupil has to come up with the most reasons to support their side of the statement. The person with the most wins then you throw the dice again. For Whole Class You need 2 dice. The first player throws a dice for the horizontal and the second player throws a dice for vertical. You then choose who is for and who is against each statement. I usually choose the first round then the second round is chosen by whoever lost the first round and so on. The whole class decides, by raising hands, which was the most persuasive. It helps to limit the amount of time to say 1 minute each.

Spag Game Year 6 SATs

(0)
SPAG Master is a game I use with Year 6 in the last few weeks before the SATs. You know how it feels - when you’ve done past paper after past paper and you still need to work on retrieval but you need some ENERGY! This is a quiz which involves partner work, team names and unlimited points and my children LOVE it. Covering all of the Punctuation and Grammar question areas from Paper 1 in a quiz format. Children work in pairs for this quiz. For each section (PPT slide) each child will be given 2 to 3 minutes (your discretion) to answer the questions independently on their own piece of paper. The next 2 minutes will be sharing and discussing answers with their partner. Before sharing, they will need to decide upon a final answer as a team. This is great for peer work, talking through HOW they came to their answer. Points are decided by the teacher: correct answers; superb explanations; good behaviour; staying focused I also deduct points to maintain behaviour management: shouting out, arguing etc. I find that the children learn very quickly that it’s all a bit of fun in the midst of all their revision and behave well beyond the first couple of deductions! Having ultimate power over the points also ensures that you can award points to children with low self esteem who need the boost. There are over 20 colourful question slides, each containing at least 4 SPAG questions. This quiz can easily be broken down into sections, over several sessions . I show this as a PPT presentation and everyone looks at the whiteboard but I have also included a PDF in case you need to print out questions. Another PPT and PDF contains the answers which I use as a class so I can see what everyone is getting out of it, what my areas of need are, giving out points and also to keep up the energy. However, this could also be used for self marking. I really hope you and your class enjoy this resource as much as we do!

Maths Games

(0)
There are various classroom maths activities, including maths games, which are purely recreational – and no doubt they have their place. But there are maths games which demand a real involvement on the part of the players and which call for both reasoning and imagination(surely two key features of any worthwhile mathematical activity). Some of these are games for two players, where the aim is to win and where competitive excitement can run high; others are solo games, where the aim is to achieve a particular objective and where the satisfaction is a more private one. We have tried numerous games in the classroom, with pupils of different ages and abilities, and have selected eight of our favourites for the collection offered here. The booklet provides clear instructions for each game, together with the appropriate grid for you to photocopy and laminate. None of the games requires complicated materials and all of them are easy to explain and to put into practice.
