An hour long, fully resourced PSHE lesson which is an introduction to independent living. The lesson focuses on how we need to be financially capable and self-sufficient as well as law abiding before we can move away to Uni to study, or in with friends or on our own to start work. The lesson is filled with engaging, well differentiated and fun activities and is useful for PSHE , ASDAN or Life Skills. The pack includes an hour long PowerPoint, differentiated challenge activities, worksheets, clips and literacy focus tasks. These resources have been designed to be engaging, detailed and easy to follow. All our resources are editable (so easy to adapt for your classes). The Independent Living Series was developed to help students prepare for the real-life challenges of getting a job and living on their own. Preparing for a Job provides detailed information about different kinds of jobs, educational requirements, and how students can find their perfect job. The first section, Job Descriptions, features 28 jobs in 9 different job categories. The practical information tells what each job is like, what kind of education and training are needed, what the average salary is and, to help with planning, the expected growth rate for each job. The next section, Skills and Interests, gives examples of tests that help students understand what they’re good at and what kind of job is right for them. The Education and Training section explains college degrees and trade schools. It also tells how on the job training, internships, and volunteering can help prepare students for specific jobs. The Cost of Living Quiz is based on the living expenses for a family of four. The quiz can be played independently or in teams and students have to estimate certain expenses that a family of four have to pay out for each week, month or year… Examples the cost of Monthly Mortgage/Rent Monthly Food Costs Electricity Costs Gas Costs Water Costs Yearly TV License Home Insurance Yearly Car & MOT Costs Clothing Costs Yearly Holiday Costs Yearly Clothing Costs Weekly Take Away Costs Monthly Phone, Sky, Internet Costs Weekly Leisure Activities If they predict the correct amount they score 10 points, if they estimate within the range given they get five points. The player or team wit the most points at the end, is the winner of the quiz. This is an excellent interactive quiz to play in teams, as it gets students working together and listening to each other. The quiz also raises awareness of the cost of living and why parents have to budget. I have used this quiz for many years and the students have always enjoyed it.

I have developed a range of independent living sequence cards for various household tasks such as make a cup of tea, make a sandwich or boil an egg. These card can be printed and each individual stage can be attached to the card using Velcro. This pack will make a good start and can also be used as a template to make further card to suit your students. *Please note that the preview only shows the task squares not the written instruction cards that goes with it. This is a resource designed for SEN students but could be used with mainstream students. The resource identifies what living independently means, what skills may be required to live independently and what you may need to think about if you are living in a property with other young people. There are multiple differentiated tasks supported by video clips that can ve used for discussion. This resource could be used over at least two full lessons.

PPT Unit of Work to support the delivery of ASDAN - Towards Independence - Living Here. The scheme is designed for students with an SEN working between P6 and NC Level 1 - Level 2. The scheme forms a good PHSE unit of work and includes targets, task explanations and proformas to be completed by students with can be tailored as required.

The first page is a worksheet for students. The other pages are for research - print out a few copies which students can pass round and complete the relevant rows on their table.
