This unit looks at minibeasts and may be useful either prior to embarking on work of a practical nature or after a practical session collecting and observing bugs. This activity should not replace the practical task of collecting bugs. The thrill pupils have in first hand observations of live creatures cannot be replicated on a whiteboard screen. Using the resources in this pack, pupils will learn about: * different kinds of animals in the local environment * that animals can be grouped according to observable similarities and differences

This KS1 microhabitats (or micro-habitats) activity is a fun way for children to explore where minibeasts would like within a garden. They’ll also think about why different minibeasts prefer different microhabitats. This resoucre can be used to support an outdoor learning activity/lesson on Minibeasts. There is a Boardmaker symbol to support each item which needs to be found. Print to landscape A4 cardstock/paper and cut out the centre circle to create a viewing window and then laminate.

This brilliant educational worksheet is a great learning activity for all little bug enthusiasts. This is a good activity for working on minibeast vocabulary, especially for small group work with EAL or SEN children. There is a set of four lotto boards, with corresponding cards to cut out, and it can be laminated to make it more durable.

A great whole class teaching activity or group activity – children use labels and pictures to sort minibeasts into insect or not insect, and match key features while cooperatively making decisions and discussing the different possibilities. Includes instructions, posters (text) to introduce Minibeasts, minibeasts pictures, group and features labels, recording worksheets and posters to check answers. A great starter activity for KS1 when teaching mini beasts or insects in Science. Print this resource several times, laminate and cut up the photos and hide in a tray with shredded paper. Place a tray on each table and challenge the children to work together to place the photos they find on the correct name of each mini beast. The table to complete first is the winner! This resource is differentiated by having a brief description of some of the more difficult to identify mini beasts, such as distinguishing between the damselfly and the dragon fly, written on the card…
