Lesson title: Who should be King in 1066? Complete lesson investigating the 4 contenders to the English throne in 1066. Pupils will make a decision on who should be King in their opinion using discussion and debate skills. All resources included in the PowerPoint. Lesson structure: Discussion on what makes a great leader, intro to the succession crisis, BBC Teach video clip, info about staking a claim, intro to the 4 contenders, activity to create an advert to sell the contender as best fit for the throne to the Witan, class vote, demonstrate: Explain who should have become King in 1066. Norman Conquest
This lesson further explores the theme of William’s control and tightening grip on England as rebellion and opposition dominate his early years.
Students will study his castle building program, from the Motte and Bailey through to stone keep castles and analyse their strengths and weaknesses.
They will question why the Normans placed their reliance on these eye sores and how their features gave them control and defence against a hostile population.
Furthermore they will evaluate how much control he was able to exert over the population using a control ‘o’ meter.
Finally there is an interactive question and answer session with an Anglo-Saxon castle builder at the time who has some interesting things to say about his compliance in all of it.
This lesson is therefore designed to be fun, challenging and engaging.
The lesson is enquiry based with a key question using a lightbulb posed at the start of the lesson and revisited at the end using a rate ‘o’ meter to show the progress of learning.
The resource is differentiated and gives suggested teaching strategies.
It comes in PowerPoint format which can be amended and changed to suit.

The lessons have been designed around the concept of change: However, these could be easily adapted if you believe the concept will be different.
E.g. Q4: ‘The main change brought about the conquest was the increased use of Normans to control areas of land.’
We teach these lessons stand alone before the control section so lessons give a small opportunity to teach the basics on these topics like castles etc.

Each lesson starts with a retrieval grid which can be easily populated with questions from your topics.
GCSE Anglo Saxon and Norman England 1060-87 for the new specification 2016.
In this lesson we look at the growth of towns after the conquest and what towns were like to live in. We start with a quick retrieval practice starter. We then look at how the towns developed into market towns, the pupils answer questions from a video clip. We then complete a text analysis where the pupils highlight the reasons for the growth of towns during Norman times. We briefly look at burgesses before focusing on trade and the pupils complete a profitability scale to show which of the aspects of trade in medieval times produced the most money for the medieval town and why. We finish with a to what extent plenary.

This lesson contains:
A starter to consider what a castle means to the students. Two images are used to get a discussion going.
An introduction to castle building and locations. The students debate which place they would build their castle and why.
A background into William’s intention of building castles, where they were build and how. Students read about the Motte and Bailey and label their copy of the castle with the correct features.
