This is a lesson designed to develop skills for answering AQA GCSE English 9-1 Paper 1 Q4 (Evaluate texts critically). It uses an extract from Transmission By Hari Kunzru and encourages students to evaluate student responses as well as write their own full answers. The tasks are differentiated to support different abilities.

Would be useful for any students who are studying Hardy's novel and provides support with themes, contextual information, essay questions and useful quotations. Page numbers cited for quotations are from the Penguin classics edition of the novel.

This resource breaks down how to answer a structure question using the opening of the novel Jaws by Peter Benchley. The pre-reading activity encourages the students to formulate their own structure and then explain why they have ordered events. The tasks build up to a complete writing activity that mirrors the AQA 9-1 Paper 1 requirements.
