I wanted my class to think about words families based on the same root word. Each tree has a root word. Children must write words with the same root on each of the branches. We discussed prefixes and suffixes first, and there is an example on the sheet.

Guided reading planning for a Year 4/5 class based on The Sheep-Pig by Dick King-Smith. A six week unit of work including Powerpoint presentations to support each chapter of the book. Many activities have been drawn from other resources available online but some have been created in line with recent training. SPAG activities focus on the Year 4/5 objectives my class need to address.

This game can be as big or small as you like. Split the class into groups and give each group the two headings (-tious and -cious). The other word cards need to be chopped up and put into a pot. The objective is obviously for the children to sort the cards under the correct headings- but why not go large? 2 hoops per group on the playground with the pots in the centre to necessitate running? Blu-tacking to the wall bars in the Hall? Who knows, fun and active might just make spelling more memorable!

I made this Guided Reading unit for my Year 4/5 class to use in the first 7 week Autumn half term. I have included spelling features which correspond with our studies during the term. There is a Powerpoint for each chapter and far more activities than there is time for, including comprehension questions and vocabulary work as well as other tasks.

The resource includes a list of business and economy class prices for flights to South American countries. It also has a selection of Golden Tickets offering a percentage discount. The discounts on offer vary by difficulty to calculate. Award the Golden Tickets appropriately to provide task adaptations for individual children. Display the ticket prices around the classroom. Children select the destination and calculate their discount (I encourage using the Bubble Method to calculate percentages).

After watching the Youtube video about learning the 17 timestable in 10 minutes, I decided to make these games for my class to take home. Just another tool to try and help them retain multiples of each number! Although my numberline only goes up to 10, children could be invited to predict the next 2- or more- numbers in the sequence.

To make children more aware of the words on the 3/4 and 5/6 Statutory Word Lists, I’ve made these Words In Action grids. 1 point if you hear someone saying one of the words. 2 points if you see it while reading. 3 points if you use it in conversation. 4 points if you use it in your writing. Challenge pupils to earn 10/10 for each word! Could be used as a homework task over 2-3 weeks, or perhaps laminated and used in the classroom.

I customised another resource about Superhero Fractions to get my Year 5/6 class calculating percentage discount. Each table gets a (differentiated) Superhero and the discount they are eligible for (see slide 3). They calculate how much each item in the Superhero Store (slide 2) would cost using the bubble method. I included a model on slide 4.

Each class will have a Lent bag this year. Inside will be things to give up and things to pray for. Every morning, the class will choose one thing to give up and one thing to pray for that day. I have made 15 of each to get the class started. I would love it if the class began to come up with their own ideas of things to give up and things to pray for during Lent.
