Lesson powerpoint, worksheets, lesson plan and topic overview included. Follow me on twitter: @ELSS_Biology. Students are designated a specialised cell and they then speed date the other students (aka specialised cells) to find out more about them. Lesson is scaffolded to support the weaker students whilst stretching the more able students. The lesson is engaging with 'levelled&' learning outcomes (SOLO taxonomy) and students found the lesson extremely fun. I have uploaded a comprehensive lesson plan and &';levelled' topic overview which may also be of use for any teachers using SOLO taxonomy.

Circulatory system - Sushi analogy @ELSS_Biology

(17)
Follow me on twitter: @ELSS_Biology. Students learn about the circulatory system. They compare the single circulatory system found in fish to the double circulatory system found in humans. Students look at pulmonary and systematic circulatory loops. Students compare the circulatory system to a model of a sushi restaurant to demonstrate their understanding. Lesson is scaffolded to support the weaker students whilst stretching the more able students. The lesson is engaging with 'levelled&' learning outcomes (SOLO taxonomy) and students found the lesson extremely fun.

Animal cell organelles ft. QR Codes @ELSS_Biology

Follow me on twitter: @ELSS_Biology. Great lesson where students use QR code readers on their phones/tablets to go on a treasure hunt collecting information about different cell organelles (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochonria, ER, golgi apparatus, ribosomes, lysosomes, cytoskeleton). The lesson uses the analogy of a factory to help students comprehend the roles of the different organelles and the analogy also offers students a platform to discuss the roles of different organelles before scanning the QR codes. QR code readers can be downloaded free on all smartphones and tablets.

SOLO TAXONOMY @ELSS_Biology

Follow me on twitter: @ELSS_Biology. We have recently introduced SOLO taxonomy as a form of assessing progress at KS3 in Biology. Have a look at the Introduction powerpoint as this can be used to introduce the type of assessment to students across the curriculum. I have also uploaded an example of a levelled topic ladder that can be used by students to track their progress each lesson and across the whole topic. This is useful for students in terms of catching up if they have been absent, reading ahead if they are eager and structuring their revision at the end of a topic.

Follow me on twitter: @ELSS_Biology. Students learn the detailed structure of the heart and the role of each structure in a carousel. This can either be followed by a teacher or student led dissection. Both powerpoints are uploaded for you to decide which best suits your group. Lesson is scaffolded to support the weaker students whilst stretching the more able students. The lesson is engaging with 'levelled&' learning outcomes (SOLO taxonomy) and students found the lesson extremely fun.

(8)
Lesson powerpoint, worksheets, lesson plan and topic overview included. Follow me on twitter: @ELSS_Biology Students investigate the 7 life processes using brine shrimps (aka sea monkeys). These can be bought cheaply from local pet shops or hatched in school. The lesson is engaging with 'levelled&' learning outcomes (SOLO taxonomy) and students thoroughly enjoyed the lesson. I have uploaded a comprehensive lesson plan and &';levelled' topic overview which may also be of use for any teachers using SOLO taxonomy.

Lesson powerpoint, worksheets, lesson plan and topic overview included. Follow me on twitter: @ELSS_Biology. Students learn about the structure of plant cells and make their own onion cell slides to observe the organelles under the microscope. Lesson is scaffolded to support the weaker students whilst stretching the more able students.

Follow me on twitter: @ELSS_Biology. Students recap their understand of physical and chemical reactions. Teacher demonstrates chemical reaction using instant ice pack. Students carry our elephants toothpaste experiment in small drinks bottles. Students then make the reactants and products using mini-marshmallows to demonstrate conservation of mass in an experiment. Lesson is scaffolded to support the weaker students whilst stretching the more able students. The lesson is engaging with 'levelled' learning outcomes (SOLO taxonomy) and students found the lesson extremely fun.
