Much Ado SOW for Key Stage 3 (originally intended for year 8 but could be used with year 7 or 9). Could also be adapted for Key Stage 4 (I used elements from it for year 11). Covers the whole play with a focus on characters and themes. Resources are included. Differentiation ideas are included as well as learning objectives for each lesson.

A SOW based on supernatural stories both contemporary and 19th century with a focus on reading to improve writing. Each story lesson looks at a different aspect of writing - lots of focus on different structures but also figurative language, characterisation and sentence types. Final assessment is writing an opening to a story. I did this with year 7 but would work for other year groups as some quite challenging material included.

This is a scheme of work I designed for year 7. We wanted to study a class novel that the students would enjoy but which would also allow us to teach the GCSE skills for English Language. The scheme includes all of the resources and presentations. There are ideas for differentiation and each lesson has its own objective. We only read up to the end of chapter 20 in class as the novel is a long one but this encouraged students to then read themselves out of the classroom.

Complete scheme of work based on short stories and extracts about the supernatural. Focuses on structural and language techniques for students to then use in their own writing.

A worksheet to help students get used to using quotations to support their analysis. Currently using the PEE structure but could be adapted for different acronyms and structures.

This is a lesson using the Monkey’s Paw. It is designed for students to start using the skills for Q.3 of Language paper 2 on the AQA GCSE spec but can be done with younger students.

A scheme of work based around Maya Angelou and 3 of her poems. The scheme is only 3 lessons with a focus on understanding what influenced the poet and how this can be seen in her poetry.

Lesson focused on teaching students about inference and then a writing task for students to try and use some of the skills they have learnt. Would be useful for Key Stage 3 but could be used a revision task for Key Stage 4.

A lesson based on analysing the Incident of the Letter chapter in Jekyll and Hyde for GCSE.

This is an activity I like to do with year 7 in their first lesson. It’s a god way of getting the students to talk a bit about themselves. The poem is based on myself so you’d probably want to adapt for you.
