Building a favela house in Rocinha (Rio, Brazil)

This is a practical activity where students can use scrap materials e.g. newspaper, toilet roll tubes, cereal boxes etc to produce favela houses. They are faced with challenges along the way to simulate real life and the struggles people face on a day to day basis. @mrmattchilds

Improving the favelas DME lesson

Students previously looked at favelas in detail, why they are there and the problems associated with them. This lesson looks at how they could be improved (student DME) and whether this should have been prioritised over the World Cup spending in 2014 (extended writing). I used this lesson as part 1 of a Y10 milestone assessment. Part 2 is explained at the end of the lesson.

I created this to use with my KS3 and KS4 Geography classes. All of the instructions are in the PowerPoint and the questions can be changed to suit any subject and any topic. I have attached the boxes as a .doc file which can be stuck onto the wall/whiteboard. There are enough boxes for 6 groups with 6 questions. The only other resource you require is mini-whiteboards and pens for each student. Print the boxes: 2 sheets to a page AND double sided, and then slice in half.

This lesson formed a case study as part of our Year 10 'Challenges of Living in a Built Environment' theme. Students investigate reasons why Stratford was chosen for redevelopment, the positive and negative social economic and environmental impacts of the changes and the impacts on different groups of people. @sphgeography
