I developed this game to fit in with a Space theme we were working on with a group of SEN students. It is based on a similar game, ‘Man Overboard’, which has a ship board theme. It is a fun game and gets students into the topic with the help of different space language. It also serves as lively physical and vocal warm up. It is suitable for all levels but the simple and repetitive nature of the commands makes it easy for students to follow instructions and to succeed at meeting the challenge.

I am compiling a selection of warm up or opening games and activities, each on a separate sheet, that I have used in my drama classes with children, young people and adults with SEN and learning disabilities. They are not all of my invention (and indeed it is hard to attribute authorship to any one person when games have become so widely used), but I have described each one in simple terms so that they are easily accessible to the drama teacher, especially if you are just starting out and are not sure what games will work with a group of students with different needs. Many games can be found online if you have the time to scroll through but often they are described in a complicated way or a slightly different form which may not work with SEN groups. I have compiled a long list of games over the years and have numbered them all. I then ask students to pick a number at the beginning of a session and then we play the game that corresponds to that number. In this way the students have ownership of the session and choices. I wrote this poem as a lesson starter for an extra curricular drama for Foundation stage. We used it as a springboard for a role play about being at school. The session was very much led by the children who enjoyed role playing as the teacher and other pupils. It stimulated ideas which helped children to re enact elements of the school day.

Suitable for KS2 and KS3 this drama resource is good for small groups getting to grips with the lyrics of classic Beatles’ song lyrics. Many of them tell stories which can be acted out and elaborated upon. Eg Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, Obla di obla da, Penny Lane, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, A Day in the Life, Eleanor Rigby, Being for the benefit of Mr Kite, Yellow Submarine, Octopus’ Garden, etc. I used this idea with a group of adults with learning disabilities and there was so much scope for characterisation and improvisation. This could be done over several sessions. Ours culminated in a Beatles’ Day with performances before an invited audience. The resource itself is a worksheet that can be given to each group to fill in once they have chosen which song lyric is going to be their starting point for an improvisation.

This is a very simple poem about a trip to the zoo. Very often I want a simple rhyme on a particular theme to use in my drama classes with EYFS or KS1. I can look for ages online but very often end up writing my own as it 's quicker! This could be used as an action poem in drama leading to a whole group improvisation, a whole class learning exercise for recitation or performance in assembly, or just a fun poem for parents to read to their child. Good fun poem about working in/going to a café! There are opportunities for individual roles with some dialogue that could be repeated after listening to the teacher. Also pupils could swap roles and repeat. Pupils can relate to the experience of ‘going out for tea’ or if they have never been to a cafe it might help them to know what it’s like. When working with EYFS in drama we sometimes role play as a group. I wrote this as a lesson starter after a pupil asked 'can we pretend we work in a café next week?' It is hard to find poems or rhymes that fit exactly what we need as teachers so I often write my own. I hope it is of use to others too!
