Active lesson, ideal for low ability students. Introduces what a salt is, how to identify an acid, alkali and salt from their names. Perfect for students who may find the pattern for naming salts difficult to spot and follow. The capital ‘I’ on each page stands for ‘initiative’. This is the skill I asked the students to focus on in the lesson - to use their initiative to look at the information to help them with each task etc. Follows full logic for how to name salts from basics of how to spot acids and alkalis. Two steps to the lesson: Step 1. How do you identify acids, alkalis and salts from their names? Step 2: How do you name salts? Plenary tests: Can you find the acid, alkali and salt in word equations? Can you identify the salt made from a acid and alkali? Can you identify the acids and alkalis that are needed to make a specific salt? Can you write a full word equation for neutralisation reactions?

Lesson covers the whole of the ‘4.7.3 Biodiversity and the effect of human interaction on ecosystems’ topic in AQA GCSE Biology and Trilogy Combined Science Specifications. Flow chart links all the ideas together and makes the relationships between cause and consequence clear. Analysis of colour coding of the flow chart supports students to understand the topic and how to use colour in their revision. Focus on 6 mark answers; how to plan and write them.

Triangles are given to support rearranging, and silly ways to remember the equations are given. This document is animated so is perfect as a tool in class to support students to learn the equations and quiz students. It works well in a live lesson as you can bring up bits on the slide one at a time and get students to say / write a comment to say what is coming next - e.g. what the equation is or what the units are. It could also be used to make flash cards or a display. On one slide the question is all written in the format as given in the exam (components of the equation in alphabetical order). On the next slide, the equation is given as in the specification, the scientific notation for the equation, the rearranged versions, a triangle to support rearrangement and a mnemonic and image to aid recall. The AQA Energy topic can be confusing for students as there are lots of equations. Some students find it challenging to see how the equations are related, including their links to the core of the unit: stores and pathways. I’ve seen students feel demoralized - ‘oh not another one!’. This resource aims to tackle that. This resource aims to increase the clarity of this topic for students, and it links to equations in later topics too, thus increasing students’ synoptic understanding. It can be used at the start of the topic to show the road map for the learning ahead, or at the end as a review, or as a poster for the classroom, or placemats that students can use during the lessons. Or any other way you see fit! There are three pages in this resource and a PDF and PowerPoint version have been included. The PowerPoint it easy to edit to remove equations. You can delete ones you don’t want to introduce to your students yet, then introduce them back later when you are ready to. The third slide is useful as a reference sheet throughout Physics. Specification points for separate science only. I am using it with a separate science class which I am teaching the separate science aspects of the course too. It has supported the students to see how their separate science lessons link to the content in their other lessons which focus on the content in the combined science course. The students change the score on the confidence tracker as we cover content in class and they revise it.
