The exam for Unit 7 - Contemporary Issues in Science is a big challenge for BTEC students. They are required to read three long articles, to evaluate, to research and to sit a 2.5 hour exam. The research they have to do over a period of 6 hours can be overwhelming to many students. In this worksheet, there is guidance for the teacher and students. There is an overview for students and a detailed step by step comfort blanket that they can use in Part A. This unit is very rewarding if covered well. Students can pick up vocabulary and analytical skills which will help them in Higher Education. This is a great unit to teach because contemporary issues in the news can be easily incorporated into lessons. It generates great debates. For some student who lack motivation, this could be just the unit that engages them. This resource suggests what can be done in lesson 1. It provides some interesting questions for students to look at. As a follow up, I would suggest use my Power Point “Introduction to Unit 7” also on TES. Possible student trips for this unit : The Francis Crick Institute, the Sanger Centre, The Science Museum. In class have a selection of journals and magazines, such as BBC Focus. They can provide great examples of contemporary issues in science.

This is a worksheet for level 3 biology students, which can be completed before carrying out the experiment which uses beetroot and colorimeters to look at how temperature affects cell membranes. It helps assess if students have got sufficient prior knowledge. It encourages students to make predictions and justify them. It provides an opportunity to apply facts, and stretches the more more able student. It also has questions on mathematics and English language. The beetroot practical involves cutting discs of fresh beetroot and placing them in water, in boiling tubes. These tubes are then placed in a variety of temperatures. After which the water in each of the boiling tubes is placed in a cuvette and the % transmission (or absorbance) measured. A graph is then plotted. It should show a significant change around the temperature which causes proteins to denature.
