SQUEAL learning mat - teaching an alternative to PEE (Point, Evidence, Explain)

SQUEAL was designed by a MA graduate as an alternative to PEE that can be used at all levels. It encourages the student to explore rather than explain and to consider the audience's response to the text, which incorporates the writers intention into their response. I use this as a laminated learning mat with a list of connectives on the reverse side - students at all levels have responded really well and find it makes them develop their ideas in a more detailed way. SQUEAL can be used at all levels GCSE, A level, Highers, Grade 10, Grade 12 and beyond.

This PowerPoint presentation provides a summary of the key features of the poem ‘To Autumn’ by Keats and is suitable for A level and IB Diploma. It explores the Ode form (with a focus on the Horatian ode), rhyme scheme and key themes as well as detailed annotation and analysis of each stanza of the poem. It is a valuable resource for teachers new to Keats as well as those with many years of experience. It also serves as a useful revision tool for your students.

This resource works well as laminated helpsheet to give to individual students - perhaps those who need guidance on how to improve their sentence construction - or as a wall display. I use it when students are improving their assessments and it reinforces good writing habits.

How many times have students asked you, "Why does the writer use alliteration?" They can identify it, they can use it, but they don't understand what effect it has on the reader. This resource enables students to independently discover how poetic devices, persuasive devices and sentence types create emotional responses in the reader.

Are you looking for an alternative to PEE, PEEL or PEED? This resource gives detailed guidance in how to get the best out of your students using the AO's to ensure they are all tackled! The bright layout makes it eye-catching for wall displays and can also be used as a learning mat. Great for those wanting to achieve a high grade in the exams! I created SQUEAL and I have used it with all year groups from year 7 to year 13. It is highly effective across abilities (please see my other resources for KS3 with a simpler format) and from my experience students perform at a higher level when using it.
