Book review template

I use this to encourage my children, my free readers, to read novels and report back on them. They retrieve sheet from me once finished a book and I read review once they have written it, to check. They are filed into a class wallet folder for all children to read. The class often use this independently to find a 'new book&' that their peers have recommended, should they be struggling to find one for themselves. I researched book review templates out there and couldn&';t find one I was happy with. This is my version.

Early Morning Thinking Skills

A powerpoint I created for my Year 5 class. A mixture of 'thunks&' (philosophical questions), word games, Maths and creative writing. I took a lot of ideas from other people&';s resources and combined them as I couldn't anything that had enough activities on. I do these activities three times a week. There are enough slides for the whole year and I just click on the next one needed. These were created for my Year 5 class but could be adapted based on the needs of your children.

Job applications

A powerpoint with class job advertised. Application forms also available. I have used as a handover activity or a first day of the new school year activity. I also have my husband come in each year and interview the children. I give them similar interview questions ahead for talk homework . I work with upper ks2 children, so not necessarily applicable or possible for everyone. Update 2014 - adapting it slightly this year, watch for new resources

We have been using mindmapping in my classroom this year - something we were encouraged to use to develop thinking skills in my last school. Here is a presentation to use with staff on how to use them and with examples of what they might look like. Attached are also some blank formats for each of the mind maps looked at in the presentation.

Oh the Place You'll Go powerpoint

I use this at the end of the year when in KS2. A great final story as they move on up to the next year. Such a powerful but emotional story. I was bought the book and given it as a good luck and leaving present when finishing my final teaching practice and bought it for my sister when she graduated. No age limit! I can't get to the end without choking up. I put in a powerpoint because then the whole class can see it and used Vladstudio pictures to make it more vivid than the illustrations in the book.

I created these and gave them to my staff. They each were given three for their particular key stage (You will see I put Year 3 in with KS1. I also gave that teacher the KS2 cards as well. I might later create some KS3 for use in year 5/6) Each teacher has a dice for before reading, during and after. They can be used during guided reading or when reading in pairs without a teacher or in a 1-1 situation.

Imagination Pictures

We use these as stimulus for short burst creative writing. The children look at the picture, single things they particular was to describe. They fill their page with experimental words/phrases, being as descriptive as they possibly can. They feedback and I cover the picture with their descriptions (I have put pictures in Powerpoint for ease, but I tend to use them in Easyteach or Interwrite so I can annotate over). I model taking extending to great sentences, using VCOP. They then try it . The sentences they develop are always brilliant and they tend to amaze themselves!

Art Progression of Skills

(16)
Compiled for our school - these are the progression of skills through the processes of art. Each half term we create focused teaching on one of these processes. Although inevitably some of these objectives will be met in cross curricular opportunities or other subjects. But we don't rely on that and so use this as a guide.

I made a 'Fiction' booklet and a 'poetry' booklet for each class in KS2. They have printed them off so every adult in the room has a 'keyring' with each booklet on it. They use them as a 'adult' prompt during guided reading, of questions that could be asked under particular headings.

I made these, with a little inspiration from another source, to use in class. These posters/flashcards have been created to use in whole class setting, guided reading and 1-1. You will see the wording is a little different for Year 1, Year 2/3 and KS2. They visually look the same so there is continuity throughout the school. The poster pages can be joined together to make an A3 poster. The flashcards - print back to back. The children have actions for each of these skills. I use them as a visual prompt in guided sessions so they know what 'reading' skill we are using.

Empathy Glasses

Photocopiable editable resource. Glasses that my class use when having to write from someone else's viewpoint. I photocopied them on different coloured card. They decorated them to make them individual, named them. Then we laminated them and cut out the eyes. We use these regularly and my kids love them. It's helpful for them to have something physical to get them into role. It&'s not also possible to have the character &';props' available for thirty!

Partitioning cards

Created because I wanted enough sets to use with a group or two. Photocopiable, editable. I printed them on coloured card, depending on place value, (all tens numbers red etc) and then cut and laminated. Takes time to make, but having many sets in the classroom in so useful. Most children now have them in their maths packs in their trays so they can independently use them to help when needed.

My kids colour them lightly, name them and then they are laminated. We write own their 'personal' targets on, things they have chosen for themselves to work on during the half term/term using whiteboard pens. We then date it. I have a large target board on a section of the classroom wall. The darts surround the target board and we move closer to the bulls-eye when we've seen it. Once they have reached the middle they get a certificate and then write a new target, date it and put back on the outside. Adults in the classroom have a personal target too. We encourage each other on them.

I can't remember quite how much I jazzed up of this or how much I used from someone else. So I totally don't take the credit! I have tried to make it user friendly for my staff and used the same &'language&'; we use when we talk about reading in our school. Enjoy!

Journey Powerpoint

(2)
A powerpoint stimulus that I used with my Y5 class to help them plan for writing about a journey 'through the woods&'. We went through it, talking about it as we went. They had copies of the slides in small and annotated as they went, scrawling down ideas. I used this on the back of a lot of build up of reading about other journeys and analysing them. Pieces of work were fantastic! Photographs, sentence prompts, questions - editable.
