Apprentice Game. This is a business game where players compete to make as much money as possible from an initial investment of £200. The game runs using a series of excel spreadsheets. All pupils need to do is decide how much to spend on making their product, what the sale price should be and the amount to spend on advertising. When every group has entered their decisions into the spreadsheet the figures are compared and sales are decided. Pupils can then predict their available capital for the next round to earn a cash bonus. It was used across the department with all ages and abilities.

Two worksheets: The first a straight forward worksheet that introduces the idea of Plans and Elevations, the second a set of puzzles where the idea is to try and build the objects using multi-link given the front elevation, side elevation and plan view. The second activty is a non ICT version of the 'Building with side views' applet found on the wis-web website, address: http://www.fi.uu.nl/toepassingen/02015/toepassing_wisweb.en.html If you haven't used this before then I highly recommend it as I&'ve never had a group that hasn&';t loved it.

The lesson investigates the fairness of the Olympic Medals table and encourages students to use maths to look at alternative ways to rank teams in the medal table. There are two sets of powerpoint slides that drive the lesson. There is a lesson plan. There are some data sheets. When I used the lesson I also showed the Scottish ladies winning the curling gold a few years back - the video can be dowloaded from the British Olympic Association site but I can't uplodad it here for copyright reasons. The Power Point Presentation: Place Value Lesson The learning objectives of this lesson are to review place value and the decimal system with a focus on reading/writing large numbers. There is also a section on comparing the sizes of numbers with a focus on decimal numbers. A suggested lesson outline is provided to demonstrate how the slides could be used, but the idea is to be customisable. Students often wonder what the practical use of mathematics might be in the real world, beyond basic arithmetic. This lesson shows and models how historians use coordinates, inequalities and probability to search for sunken ships or lost treasures. The basic premise is that the search field is divided into a coordinate grid. Eye witness statements/evidence indicating the whereabouts of the lost artifact are turned into inequalities and used to score different coordinate squares in the search field. A higher score is given to evidence from a more reliable source. When all the inequalities have been plotted, and each square scored then the squares with the highest score in the search field are those with the highest probability of finding the treasure. When searching for treasure, especially at sea, resources and time are limited so this technqiue is used to optimise search time. The presentation contains a starter on hypothesising rules for linear sequences and then discusses the application of this to building sky scrapers. There is a chance to model this in action with a real life skyscraper before students try for themselves. All answers provided. Pupil 1a and Pupil 1b are two differentiated worksheets (an easier and harder version) to be used in lesson 1. The Pupil Assessment Sheet is what you get the pupils to do in silence for the last 15 mins of each lesson to assess their progress (under test conditions) The final file is a mark scheme to provide some indication of levels achieved.

You need Geogebra to use this which is available as either a browser run applet or a free download from here: http://www.geogebra.org/cms/en/download This works best with an interactive whiteboard and was amazingly simple to program, but I've yet to come across a class of any age that isn&'t mesmerised by it. Simply drag the blue dot around the page with a pen/mouse and the squiggles you make are reflected vertically and horizontally like a Kaleidoscope. Reflections 2 does the same trick with diagonal lines of symmetry.

You need Geogebra to use this which is available as either a browser-run applet or a free download from here: http://www.geogebra.org/cms/en/download TRANSLATIONS Translations gives you a dynamic triangle (you can change its location/shape by dragging the vertices around) and shows its image under a translation. The translation is described in words, as a column vector and as an arrow vector. Any of these can be turned off by clicking on the selection boxes. The magnitude of the translation can also be altered by dragging the sliders for 'x' and &'y&'; independently.
