A stand-alone lesson with PPT and 5 differentiated worksheets. This lesson breaks down close language analysis for GCSE students into 4 simple steps. Showing them how it is possible to “say a lot about a little” by zooming in closely on specific words and phrases.

This lesson uses Carol Ann Duffy’s ‘Valentine’ and William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 43 as examples but the premise can be adapted for use with quotes from any literature being studied.

This lesson includes “Aim High” stretch targets throughout, and offers differentiated worksheets.

This lesson will help hone student’s exam skills, enabling them to elevate their writing to higher levels by ensuring they include close text analysis in their answers.

WHEN TO USE? It works as well:

  • As part of a wider scheme of work studying poetry or literature
  • As a stand alone skills/revision lesson in the lead up to assessment
  • As part of an assessment feedback, helping students to improve their grades through close-text analysis.

Amazing resource thank you! I am a student teacher working full time whilst doing my PGCE. I used this lesson for one of my observed classes with Y11 and got great feedback. Students responded really well. A few 'light-bulb' moments! Have added this to my toolkit and will definitely use again. THANK YOU!
