A blank chart for pupils to complete after studying the poems** If** and** Poem at Thirty-Nine** from the Edexcel IGCSE Poetry Anthology for English Literature. Good preparation for tackling a comparative essay.

The eight questions to compare the poems are:

  1. What is happening in the poem?
  2. How would you describe the tone of the poem?
  3. How much wealth and power do you think the father has in society?
  4. What impression is conveyed of the father’s personality and his approach to being a parent?
  5. What is the relationship between father and child and how is this conveyed?
  6. What evidence is there of the influence of the father on the child?
  7. What comparisons can you make between the endings of the two poems?
  8. What comparisons can you make between the language, form and structure of the two poems?
