Celebrate and learn from the stories of famous disabled people in history and today with this engaging and inclusive lesson for disability history month. This lesson covers the following learning objective and success criteria:

Learning objective: To learn about the lives and achievements of some famous disabled people in history and today, and how they overcame the challenges and barriers they faced.
Success criteria: By the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
★ Name some famous disabled people in history and today and describe their disabilities and accomplishments.
★ Compare and contrast the experiences and opportunities of disabled people in different historical periods and contexts.
★ Express your opinions and feelings about the stories of famous disabled people and how they inspire you.

This resource pack includes:
★ A detailed lesson plan with clear instructions.
★ A PowerPoint presentation with slides for the starter, main teacher input, main activity, and plenary.
★ Eight famous disabled people cards with information and images of Helen Keller, Stephen Hawking, Frida Kahlo, Ludwig van Beethoven, Stevie Wonder, Alex Zanardi, Aaron Fortheringham, and Warwick Davis.
★ A presentation criteria sheet with a checklist.

This lesson is designed to develop the students’ knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of disability as a natural and diverse part of human life, and to inspire them to pursue their goals and dreams, and to support disability equality and inclusion in their school and community. It also supports the development of the students’ research, presentation, and communication skills, as well as their critical thinking and creativity.
