This topic always opens up useful discussions on what qualifies certain individuals to be printed on English bank notes, and also which kind of people we can expect to see on bank notes in another twenty or thirty years time.

However, the strength of this topic lies in the variety of 20th century cultural icons along with the work they are associated with being inevitably studied and explored. For example, most of my students were fascinated to learn about the extraordinary but tragic life of Alan Turing, the WWII Code breaker who is set to be featured on the Fifty Pound note.

The great reward I have found students enjoying is the opportunity to include their own cultural icon to include on the back of a new bank note.
